u know how u can get fucked up on the easiest shit? well i hit a handrail today that was a little wobbly cuz of the melting of snow recently. it threw me off balance landed so far backseat i was laying down. it fucking KILLED my shins. i just had to lay there for about 5 min. i thought both my legs were broken. after a few min i could move my legs again although it was painful so i got up and limped off the hill packed up and went home. ive been icing my legs for a few hours and they still hurt like a bitch without even putting weight on them or moving them at all. what do u think the problem is? could it be a hairline fracture? i dont know what it feels like cuz ive never broken anything.

sounds like bad shin bang. Usually after a day of skiing my shins are dead so I ice them a ton. Also, tighten up ur boot u cant feel ur feet. that helps. also, I guess putting sponges in ur boot helps, but I am yet to put it to the test.

my boots were as tight as possible. ive tried the sponge thing b4. it works for a few hours and then the sponge gets all compressed and actually makes it a little worse.

chances are its not a hairline fracture, you probably just bruised them really badly, it happens to me every year. At least once a year I land badly like that and can hardly move for a few minutes. Even if it is a hairline fracture, there isnt anything they can do about it, you just have to take time off. Keep up the ice as well as stretching exercises (stand facing a wall, put your hands out at chest level against the wall and lean forwards. Then go up and down on your toes, it will stretch out your shins) and take some time off.

shin bang, it hurts really bad, you just have to wait for it to heal.

well good luck then, if you can take the pain then go for it, just be careful to not make it worse

i love it when parents try and diagnose things. the thing with a tib?fib injury is that if its in the mid shaft, its very rarely going to be a hairline fracture, youll either do a spiral or a complete. both of those are far more painful and unless its a minor fibular spiral fracture in which youd have severe and continual problems weight bearing, id say its less severe.
if its still hard to stand on ur left in a day or so, it might be worth an xray, but if it continues to improve, its just bad bruising (which can be fucking painful on the anterior shank). ice it, rest it, ski if u must, but ul prob be very sore on landings for the rest of the season with that much bruising.

people keep saying that this is shin bang...WRONG! shin bang is when you hit your shins against your boots...this is landing backseat.landing backseat creates what...well...SHIN SPLINTS!tiny micro crakcs in your bone that are extremly exruciating and can only be healed with time and ice helps a bit. if its that serious id get yourself checked out but other then that do NOT ski or run or do lots of excersise till they get better. pribly about a week/week and a bit

in a week in a half my mountains closed and im pretty sure shins bang starts from landing backseat so that it make ur shins hurt later when u bang ur boot on em.

if you can still walk just tough it out for the rest of the season. you can rest when the snow melts. for now, take some meds before you go skiing, have your boots as tight as possible during skiing, and alternate between ice/heat afterwards. its too late in the season to take time off, and thats pretty much the only thing that will cure it.

no.when you land backseat the pressure and force from, it pulls your shins apart literally. most people think its shin banmg after because it hurts so much when there boots touch their shins but this is called shin splints. shin bang is just caused from you hiutting your shins against your boots repetitavly

ya, technically it is shin splints...and the great force landing backseat slowly causes stress fractures in your shins...unfortunately the only thing you can do is ice and rest. You might want to try immersion, it hurts but helps quite a bit. Take a bucket or garbage can that would go up to your knees, fill it half full with ice and half water. Stand in it for 15 minutes, it will hurt at first but it helps a lot.

dude, your a big white boy so ill go easy, but shin splints are not created by a single back seat landing.
it is a periostitis and by definition an overuse injury, not a traumatic injury. i know this because its my job to know this.
dont give advice you have no training to offer.

i know you dont get it from one big backseat landing...personally i get shin splints at the end of every weekend. after maybe say 5-6 backseat landings i usually start to hurt and get uncomfortabel. after a few more good backseat landings im toast. i can do rails but spinning large jumps are pretty much out of the question. i assumed this guy has landed backseat more then once and if your shins are already weakened and in pain than a major bs landing might cause this pain

fine, but what you describe above is your "shins being pulled apart, literally". what you are describing is a traumatic strain of the syndesmosis which extends laterally from your tibia to your fibula, which is mechanically different fom shin splints, which occur as a result of repetative traction on the medial compartment muscles where they insert into the medial tibial border.
Shin splints, for the record, are also not the same as stress fractures, but do share the same mechanism. Stress fractures are in effect often the consequence of untreated shin splints.

you do know more then me on this topic so i trust that what you have to say is much more indepth then my description but i was just sorta givin the basic average joe outline of what his problem was. cause it sure as hell wasnt plain old shin bang...he should probly get checked out by someone like you because even with harsh backseat landings you shoudl not be lieing there for 5 minutes...

well after sleeping on it for a night and icing it/putting icy hot on it i can pretty much walk without a limp and i doesnt hurt unless i touch it or put weight on it so it seems to be getting better. im just gonna take a few days offf and hopefully be back out friday

HAha, enjoy.
I have the same problem right now. Sunday night I had trouble sleeping cause of the pain.
If you want to keep skiing, pain-killers, and rails and absolutely NO backseat landings.
Ice the fuck out of them too.

I did the same sort of thing mang a few years ago, i think that your problem may be bigger than shinbang. If you cant evenbump the sore spot without it hurting really bad, you might have cracked your leg (tib or fibia). I had trouble putting weight on my one leg that was hurt and i ended up getting an xray and there was a small ass crack in my bone on the outer layer of the bone, luckily it didnt break all the way through. You are prob gonna have to quit skiing for awhile, get a xray and have the doc look real close for minute cracks.. Its not something that needs a cast though if you didnt crack it all the way through.

i had small fractures all over my shins from getting shin bang so much...they dont come up on X-rays tho. But i believe its what has lead to my ended season that never really began. All i can say is take a week or two off and never land backseat again!

ya you have to get a bone scan for stress fractures to show up, unless they are already healing. I had one once when I stress fractured both of my femurs, it was actually pretty cool. They inject you with Technitium-99 which is a radioactive isotope and then they told me to not have sex and to make sure to flush the toilet after i piss for the next 12 hours or so haha.

that sounds exactly like shin splints. if you land that hard backseat it pulls the shin muscle off of the shin bone, causing shin splints. the only way to get rid of them is to take it easy. ice might help a little but nothing will speed up the process.

you probably broke those little bones on the side/back of your leg.

as some one who is intreasted in the medical field i would probably say that you either A completly bruised your shin, and shold get it looked at (internal bleeding sucks) my sister did something like that a while ago, she was playing soccer and slammed into the wooden floor, you might of swollen up your bone..in that case, you should get it looked at.(by the way, that was option B)..but if you can move and stuff, you did not break it..but maybe c is you compressed a nerve, or something to do with that
