Just wondering what most people think of it. It's ok if you wouldn't ever join, just want to know how you see it as a typical American.

The Military, sadly, is necessary and under proper government integral to the safety and security of society. However it is also a powerful weapon which can and has been used for terrible evil. It is this blind obedience to orders that makes the military necessary and dangerous. In a perfect society the military would not be necessary and only dangerous, but we do not live in a perfect society.
I think of people in the military as hard working individuals who are either motivated or confused. The motivated ones knew they wanted to be G.I. Joe when they were six and the confused ones were looking for a way out of dodge or maybe they bought the recruitment posters.
One thing is for sure the military changes people weather for better or worse is based on the individual.
Thats what I think of the military.

I could get into Yale if my dad was Sr. George Bush. I could also do a lot better than a low C average. Bush is not smart and no where in his tenure as president has he shown a glimmer of intelligence. Everything in his life was given to him on a golden platter. For god sakes the fucker grew up in Connecticut in a mansion and then lived on a million dollar ranch in Texas. He is not a man of the people he is not a down home Texas boy. He is an expensive puppet. If you really want the truth about Bush read Armed Madhouse by Greg Palast.

Do you realize there are jobs in the military that after basic u will never touch a weapon again or even be put in a combat zone...such as paper pushers research cooks inspectors the list is endless...i will get a college education without ever stepping foot in Iraq not because they told me so but because my job is never going to be required in a combat zone?
So why is that stupid?

Yes there are "remf" jobs in the miitary, but remember the type of "leadership" we have and the type of warfare we are faced w/ this day and age. I can tell you from witnessed experience you will deploy and face ample amounts of danger in the box, regardless of job or MOS. Not trying t discourage you just want ya to have a heads up brah!

Im sorry, how am i ignorant in saying that I would kill for what I believe in???
I would never join the army though- Some people who join are simply killing for what they believe in.
Anyway, im really not sure how that is ignorant so please explain. Its really just human nature

You are ignorant because, even though you aren't in the military, you are making a ridiculous generalization by saying that "people who join are simply killing for what they believe in." Most of the people in the military are looking for a steady job, satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment, and for many help with college. MOST of the jobs in the military don't involve direct combat, so to say that everyone in it is a bloodthirsty patriot is a very ignorant thing to say.
And don't call me stupid, I wouldn't call you stupid even though I'm smarter than you are.

your the one who started the name calling, and you just continued it with that last statement. I just felt the need to call you stupid for that..
In any case, I didnt say all. Im not generalizing. I said some.
In any case, a lot of the people who join are retarded. If you dont know what you stand for enough to either be a blood thirsty patriot in the army, or choose not to be in the army for whatever reason (either one, I would hope would be politically inspired) then you are what is wrong with America. In other words, if you are just in the army because its a job and it gives you some direction, then you are what is wrong with America, and you really need to rethink the reason behind your fucking action!

First of all, if you look up ignorant in the dictionary you might be less offended by the term.
Second, I think the part of America that is screwed up is the people who bitch about the problems of America without actually taking any action about it. And if people stopped joining "because its a job and it gives you some direction" then we wouldn't have a military. Please enlighten us with why you think someone SHOULD join, because so far you have dismissed any reason to ever take a part.

Well said mate!! You know what my favorite moto is Quit talking about and be about it!! If ya got so much too say then get yourself into a position to act on your words. Don't hide behind your insignificant lifestlye of whatever it is you do. I don't mean to be harsh... but when you watch a good friend die in front of you.. thats hard no matter how tough you THINK you are, when it comes down to it..."when that first bullet flies by your head, politics and all that other shit goes rite out the window"

all you hippies who hate on the military are ungrateful little bitches and youre a bunch of fucking cowards. I shudder to think what would have happened if this generation was somehow transcended through time to 1941 when there was a war in Europe and we were attacked by the Japanese. Tom Brokaw called them the greatest generation and rightfully so. Draft? sure there was a draft but everybody went. there wernt hippies like you cowards carrying signs and protesting at colleges your parents pay 45000 dollars a year to smoke pot and get wasted at. Nobody moved to Canada. Young men, 18, 19, 20 years old dropped everthing and went overseas to go get some. Now i know there are a lot of youngsters on here who might not be familiar with the events of September 11th 2001. We were attacked attacked by a terrorist organization and over 2000 CIVILIANS were killed. we vowed to root out and kill any of these terroists or anyone who supports terror. Now if you hippies are too concerned with your skateboards and pot and 11th grade history, thats fine, dont join our volunteer military. But at least keep your mouth shut. We would rather you just said thank you for sacking up and serving our country. Dont ever complain about the military when you are too lazy and too much of a coward to do anything for your country. Now get a haircut and shut the fuck up.

You my friend have a very flawed view...please explain that further because i joined becuase it is a well paying job and a full education on the other side...im not some blood thirsty patriot...when i finish my 6 year enlistment i will have a college degree and i am already certified in aircraft maintance in the field of Non-destructive inspection, which on the civialn side starts out at about $80-$100,000/ year. ANd because of my training I am already certified in it.
Please explain to me why i am whats wrong with America?

someone SHOULD join if they beileve everything and anything the millitary does is the right thing to do.
thats the only time. smokinskier, im sure you have good intentions, but by being in the army, your helping Bush kill in Iraq- even if your not doing the killing yourself.
Life to me is not about what job you can get and what money you can make. maybe im just that way because my family is well off to begin with. Anyway, life to me is about the principles you stand for, and im getting real sick of seeing people who dont care.

Dude you can still be in the military and not agree or belive everything the military says is the right thing to do! See that is a maturity issue u have. Ant job or an every day occurance you face opposition and conflict. It's how you deal with that that builds character and end product. The world aint perfect and I don't think ne1 is saying the military is. I'm in the ARMY and you know what it's a damn good lifestlye. It ain't for every1 and quite frankly only a few well rounded people make it a carrer People need to let the politicans deal w/ the rest of the bullshit

The military wastes so much money its rediculous......they are far from being even slightly efficient in anything they do.
And once again, I would never join the military being the state the government is in now, fuck that.
And people who say it pays for your education....so does financial aid. YOu have to pay it back, but dont act like the military is your only option.

HAHAH yea they do waste azz loads of $$ your rite about that 1 man! I can insure your doubts are inncorrect, in the ARMY not being efficient in anything. I am highly trained and EFFICIENT in my unconventional tasks and duties. I could blow a fuckin building down using a quater stick of C-4!!

maturity issue...well rounded people...let the politicians deal with the rest of it...
man, they have already brainwashed you.
The problem with a lot of people today is they dont take enough action. they are too lazy or too cought up in making money. My dad is a teacher. He used to be a lawer. He quit being a lawer because he couldnt stand some of the things he had to stand for. Being a teacher is a noble thing to do. You get paid shit, but atleast your helping out scociety. I just think people out to think about their impact on society and what causes exactly they are helping when they choose a carrier.

I am by no means "brainwashed" bro. I agree that people talk to much without taking actions. While your father's job is a noble 1, so is being a solider! Just remember we are all human i don't agree w/ every thing the army says! But guess what no matter what the people of the USA say or feel about us were the same fuckers out there puttin it all on the line for YOU. That is a noble task! Oh yea you get paid shit here in the Army as well

wow, you are so profound and groundbreaking questioning our government, thats real deep. Does anyone else ever wonder why the people who question and complain about our government are often the people who know the least about it? usually its just lazy teens with nothing better to do than bitch. What is so bad about this country and this military? name one way it has negativly effected your life. I bet you cant do it without sounding like a whinny bitch. and a draft? first of all the last time we had a draft your parents probably wernt even old enough to dodge it and you know there are countries out there, ie south korea and isreal, where everyone serves a minimum of two years? mull over that one for a while. i dont see too many koreans and israelis running to canada.

The problem with this argument is that while the military is an essential part of our nation, so are other jobs and occupations. Doctors are pretty damn important if you as me, and if you are talented enough to be a doctor, you would disservice your country by ignoring that and joining the infantry.
But its not just doctors in this argument. What about politicians? They're pretty important. Or what about manufacturers? Farmers? Without them, troops wouldn't get the equipment and food they need in the field.
What about investment brokers? They contribute to our economy, which is a larger stick in nowadays world than an impressive military. Aren't they noble in their pursuits as well? I mean, they contribute to the greatness of our nation, and give us power... without them, our nation would crumble. They seem as important to me in this day and age as a strong military.
I dont think one occupation in this country is more noble than another. Even if there was some measure of 'nobleness' when it came to profession, it would be on a case by case basis. Good smart and intelligent people would belittle themselves if they chose to cook at an army base over being a osteopathic surgeon.

How about the fact that...
My dad sold his business and had to pay 40% of what he made to the government. High taxes my friend. Completely unnecessary military spending and NASA projects have caused our taxes to be ridiculously high on the upper middle class and anyone that makes money but gets fucked over on the social benefit.

I absoultly agree with the noble thing! I am not asking for reconision at all. I had zero intentions for it to come out this way. I think that we all need to take a look at ourselves and find what is the best job or carreer for our potential. From what I have seen in the ARMY people join for all sorts of different reasons, those that join for selfish reasons are undoubtly the worst soliders I have ever worked with.

Ok, name one GOOD thing the current military has done for me. Protect my freedom? from who? My own country?
I can name 3 negatives:
1.Our country sends alot of people to their death daily, whether its soldiers or innocent people. Every state in the US has lost at least one person to this war, for what reason? So the rich can get richer.
2."Everyone wants to bomb us, everyone is OUT TO GET US!! OH NOES!!!!11. If it wasnt for our military, I would be bombed!!" The level of fear is insane, CArtoon Network scandal anyone?
3. They spend wayyyyyyyy more money than they have and keep asking for more cause they need about 20 billion dollar planes/helicopters every day cause they either wreck them or accidently blow them up.

I work for an environmental consulting company. I and my boss are making sure people arent fucking up the environment in the area I live at by making sure people do all of the right paperwork/waiting/ when they are developing land or changing over land boundaries. We deal with everything from sewer/water/environmental concerns.
I try to ride my bike as much as possible. I dont litter, I dont waste water. I try to recycle as much as I can. I referee soccer games. I skateboard, ski. I've participated in many trash cleanups along highways....just to name a few.

"The ideal set up by the Party was something very huge, terrible and
glittering — a world of steel and concrete of monstrous marching and
terrifying weapons — a nation of warriors and fanatics, marching
forward in perfect unity, all thinking the same thoughts, wearing the
same clothes and shouting the same slogans, perpetually working,
fighting, triumphing, persecuting—three hundred million people all with
the same face."
I am not in the least disputing the fact that every nation needs and army or means to defend itself. What I am disputing however, is your unbelievable claim that we as people should not voice our opinions. Humans have lived in those governments in the past. Perhaps you would be more at home in a Feudal system.
The ability of free speech is one of the founding principles of our nation, and one that has set us apart, and I believe above and beyond, other nations at its time of conception. What you seem to wish is that all voices of dissent and opposition to your ideals be silenced. When the connection between the voices of the people and the government that rules them is severed, most commonly, the government begins to amass its power and freely exerts its control over people. Its not because of any administration that might be running it, its just the way these institutions naturally run if unchecked.
Lastly, thanks for the attempt at personal insult, it was endearing and touching. If you want to at the very least impart the visage of intelligence and thinking upon others that read your writing, you should consider dropping your methods in the future. Personal attacks really dont lend much credence to your arguments, and only further your self-induced image of an immature loudmouthed asshole.

word to that man, sorry I get worked up in the forums alot lol. What do you do in the army?
Thank you for serving time mang. I dont hate the people in the military, i just dont agree with the way it is operated in this era. Feel free to disagree with me.
Yea unfortunately, the world will never be perfect, but we each need to do our part. An individual seems so small, but we are capable of alot. We all need to progress as fast as we can, and make things work better than just trying the same thing over and over and it never works. That is my biggest problem with our government. Having these discussions is a good thing.
In my opinion, our military could use a complete overhaul, but that is my opinion. But we all need to stand up for what we think is right and work our way up to that point.

i would never join the military, we definatly need one though.
i also think its crazy that an 18 year old can be drafted, mabye some are capable and ready for it, but im sure most arent, half the kids at my school who are 18 are short skinny guys that could pass as a 12 year old, and it would be crazy for them to be drafted.
it should be atleast 21 if not older

I think that is completly untrue. your not doing anything for me being in the army. if anything, you are simply creating more conflict in the world.
