Just wondering what most people think of it. It's ok if you wouldn't ever join, just want to know how you see it as a typical American.

first off im in the military and im not here to bash ur opinions cuz they arent all that bad like u say patriotism is shown in alot of ways and it doesnt mean u have to join the military. There are alot of unpatriotic ppl that join...
second of all if ur friend was promised money u have to sign like 4 papers saying ur gettin it and trust me u get the money i have recieved shitloads of bonuses, stipends, recruitment extras and its very clear what and why ur gettin it...so if ur friend is claming he didnt get his money then it would be very easy for him to trace what hes owed, why, and how to get it....or the alternative HES LYING and wasnt owed what he says cuz trust me u get paid!!

id never join the military personally, and id be a "conscientious objecter" (pussy) if drafted.
however, i do think that it works for some people, especially the order and discipline, so i wouldnt think negatively of anyone if they joined

Nobody is protecting freedom anymore. If anything, we are losing it. Protecting freedom would be voting against the patriot act and such.

hmmmmmm, thats a pretty good point.
but you do have to recognize her want to serve her country. its admirable for anyone to see it as a good opportunity and go for it no matter what you believe

I see your point and it goes both ways but no one is right in this situation...
Is the war in Iraq protecting us probly not but maybe with all the attention over there and the focus of the terroists fighting our troops it saves an attack over here
but i agree i dont like the protecting freedom speech either its corny and over used but with out ppl joining willingly it would be a much diff country and u may have choices made for u like many countries around the world...so yea we r in a saving u to have the freedom to not join!

The war in Iraq is doing nothing to divert an attack here. Yes, people enlisting is good.
You see all these politicians talk about how we have to protect freedom and keep the terrorists at bay. We see the name Al Qaeda and are taught to hate it.
I just saw on the news all this talk about Al Qaeda being in Iraq. First of all this is completely HORSE SHIT. I can't even believe this is allowed to run it's course on national television. Al-Qaeda is a Saudi, Afghan, and Pakistani fed group. These areas are known for their Sunni background, Iraq is known for their Shiite background. Seriously, this doesn't even make sense. I hate how misinformed our whole system is.
Anyway back to the point...we use the military far too much to be protecting our own freedom.

First off u cant say the war is doing nothing to divert an attack on US soil just as i cant say it is...its impossible to know...
second then why are they finding bodies of Saudis, and Pakistani terrorists in Iraq...IT is a known fact that Al Qaeda is sending ppl into Iraq, not to win the war but to turn our ppl against our government in a diff sort of political victory
And to ur "we use our military far to much" line...that may be my only point was nearly every nation has a military everyone needs one...countless nations it is mandatory to join at a certain age..because of the millions who have joined willingly ur freedom to not serve is protected...so to say we dont protect ur freedoms falls of deaf ears in my opinion!

Uh yes we can know. No terrorists involved in 9/11 or Al Qaeda were descendants of any Iraqi blood. There was no terrorists there out to get us. Saddam wasn't going to do anything to us. There were no plans of it.
See no, Al Qaeda is so blown out of proportion. Al Qaeda is actually a realllllly small group. People now associate any terrorist group with Al Qaeda. I have never heard of Saudi and Pakistani terrorist bodies found in Iraq. Maybe native born, but not terrorist operatives, so I don't know where you got that information (probably off tv).
Yes, of course we need a military, but we don't need to have it in almost every country of the world. Protecting our freedom would be an army that actually protects our country. The army isn't doing that right now. We are actually endangering ourselves more.

eh im done ur obviously not listening...
im not sayin iraq had n e thing to do with 9 11..but it is true that there are terrorists from many diff groups not just al qaeda in iraq because we brought the fight to them...i dont get my information from TV...i get it from the source ACTUAL PPL in IRAQ(whats your source?)...I know u wont believe me cuz its devistating to your point but the terrorists are in Iraq NOW...Where they before the war no...but they know if they keep disrupting our plans in Iraq it will frustrate the American ppl as it is doing and rightfully so...for as smart as u pretend to sound just think about it it makes sense for them to fight us there its an easy way to get a political victory...but hey ur right the only ppl we r fighting in Iraq are ppl that are loyal to Saddam cuz he was so great to them!!
And when did i ever say we need a military in every country...but no matter where we go or how much u think we r in the wrong spot or doing the wrong thing(which by the way we dont choose where to go)...if it wasnt for us u wouldnt be sitting back behind a computer talking shit about the military that gives you the right to do so without having to worry about being drafted!! So ill be the bigger person and say your welcome im happy to give you that right to talk shit and never have to be put in harms way even though u are to simple minded to understand what im sayin

Grammar helps a lot.
Now you need to ask yourself. Are the people in Iraq terrorists, or are they guerrillas? I don't know who you're talking to in the military, but like I said, I haven't heard of anyone finding Saudi or Pakistani bodies in Iraq that were members of Al Qaeda, so once again I see no proof of any of that. Obviously they are disrupting our plans in Iraq because it is effecting them in a negative way. I'm pretty sure if someone wanted to install a government you didn't believe in you would try to fight it off too. I never said the people we are fighting were loyal to Saddam. In fact that's the complete opposite point I'm trying to make. People are fighting because of our presence, not because they liked Saddam.
I never tried to claim that you said that. I was just stating it's not necessary to have some part of our military in every corner of the world, I'm sure you agree with that. How do we not choose where we go? That makes no sense. We send the troops from our government and representatives' votes. Now you're just being an idiot. I said I respect the fact that people join the army. I think it's great. I'm not talking shit about the military, just the people who run it, and the fact that we are placed in situations we don't need to be in and that will fuck us over in a few years. I'm not trying to sound smart, and I'm not simple minded. As you will see in my previous posts, I think the military is a great opportunity for people who are not as fortunate as most people money wise and a great place for people to get a great experience. However I don't agree placing troops in Iraq is a good experience.
Doesn't it anger you about the lack of care and reparations the veterans of Iraq get?

No i do agree with you in many ways thats y ur one of the only ppl i have responded to in this thread becuase u do see both sides of it...i guess i didnt see some of you r other points but yes i just wanted to make it clear which you understand, that we join for many diff reasons in all honest i didnt join to protect anyone...I did it to finish my college education which i couldn't afford on my own...but i took that oath and if i have to go so be it...It does anger me the backslash the actual troops receive because they have no choice in the matter we all had dif reasons for joining and contrary to public belief we didn't all join to " GO KILL PEOPLE" which alot of ppl seem to think is everyone in the military's opinion(I know u dont)
As far as terrorists over there i have heard from ppl coming back that al qaeda is over there and we r told that in security briefings as far as its validity i guess it could be wrong...intelligence isnt always correct as we learned from the WMDs. Yes many in the resistance are guerrillas but it is very easy to see why dif organizations would take interest in the fighting in IRaq.
And i meant the actual troops dont choose where we go...yes our government chooses but its not like there is a group of us sitting around like hey lets go into Iraq today

*sigh*
9/11 didnt have anything to do with iraq. thats what afghanistan was for (remember that place?)
9/11 was pretty much just used as an excuse to attack iraq. its like attacking england if americans did something to some other country.

I've opened up this thread countless times wanting to read what everyone's opinions are, but have refrained from doing so because I know it would just cause a lot of unwanted emotions and wasted energy. Newschoolers is definetely not the place to look for intelligent and informed opinions about such a complex topic, especially when the majority of the population is not even eligible to join.
Needless to say, I was in the Canadian forces reserves as an infantry soldier for over two years, and just recently released.

read "One bullet Away" or "Generation Kill" both about first recon during the invasion of Iraq, both talk about reserve troops going through iraq and being jittery, and shooting up everything in sight.

I disagree.
I think it is the fact that everyone on newschoolers is an average citizen (and of the age to make some difference in the future) it is interesting to see the opinions of many in this thread.

I feel sorry that our system does such a great job of siphoning off those who are not able to provide for themselves by promising riches in the military. You should not have to risk your life to get food or a college education. I see a breakdown of society at this point.
A military is a useful thing to have, but to use it in an offensive manner is a grave foreign policy mistake that will only cause more trouble than it solves. The occupation of Iraq will create more terrorists then it claims to be killing, and will ruin whatever trust the Middle East still has for America. Guerilla wars of the past, such as Korea or Vietnam have taught one thing: the only sure way to avoid a war of geurilla atrition is to prevent it in the first place through careful and well thought out foreign policy.

most people in the military do not have a romantic relationship as you are eluding to here, but there is a brotherhood that is formed that is different then any other relationship that you will have in your life.
I belive it was shakespear that wrote something to the effect of
for he who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother

Well people like him make me so mad. They bitch and complain about everything and don't know a damn about anything. Without the military we wouldn't be a country. The war has been good because there hasn't been anymore terroristic actions carried out in the US because of the military, and you know there would have been more

#1, anyone in the military is worth more than you
#2, there are many women in the military
#3, not everyone "fight's for the flag", whatever you mean by that
#4, if you think every soldier believes islam "sucks", than your just an ignorant bastard (which you've already proved)
#5, not a single person in my regiment has ever told me they have gone on tour because of religion
Do i even need to continue ?
The bond you form with a fellow soldier is unexplainable, as you go through all the same shit together, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You get to know everything about them and go through all the ups and downs that come with being in the army. Actually, your not even worth my time, so I'll end it here.

Well I didn't mean it seriously... I meant it theoretically. Like to think if you were directly involved, your views would be totally different, but since your not directly involved, you tend to take things for granted. And people are risking their lives to protect our country and people are making fun of them, thats just wrong man

So what? Be the bigger man; let him be ignorant and uneducated and make stupid comments, but when you say something like that, it destroys any other legitimate argument you might have had. Take the higher road bro, it's respectable and appropriate.
