Format converter program

I'm looking for a program that will convert movies from AVI to a format for DVDs but all the ones I have found you have to pay for or they show the name of the program in the middle of the screen while you watch the movie.  Does anyone know of any program that can do this? If not, I guess Ill have to get somethings using torrents so which program should I get?
