Okay, so I was thinking about trying some new tricks in the park, on some normal size jumps (15-25 feet, South Park at Mammoth for those of you who know). I am currently clearing every jump in the line, and doing mute's, shifty japan's, etc. and I was thinking of trying a 360 and/or a backflip. The one thing I was worried about is how mad people seem to get when someone falls on one of the jumps, that and there the next person would land on me before they knew I had fallen. Oh ya, one last thing, I have had 6 major concussions in my life and don't want to get tooo many more, so avoiding landing on my head would be a good thing. Opinions, suggestions, flaming, etc. welcome.
Thanks for being an asshole. Anyways, ive heard people say backflips are easier, but thats hard to beleive and their definately more intimidating. But you could defintalry land a 3. You sound waaay better than me, all i can do is like safetys and reqally bad mutes, nothing other than hopping 90 on 90 off on boxes/rails, and last weeek i decided to try 3's, first i didnt commmit, ladned 270, but didnt really hurt, next I landed backseat, but I overrotated a little, and this was a crappy like 7 foot kid park jump. I wanted to learn on something small, so I knew i wouldnt stall out on a big kicker and land backwards or sideways or something, even though I found it didnt really hurt. So now that IO know I can over rotate a jump that small, itll jsut be a matter of handling more air. So, my answer, I think you should def. go for a 3.
360 bro for sure, backflips arent that cool anyway and kind of have high consequences.
Just keep getting sessioning the park and making your straight airs really smooth. Skiing with another good skier who can do 3's will help your confidence alot. When you feel real comfortable in the air and u are hitting the transitions perfect everytime, now is the time to 3. Like i said, watching and skiing with a buddy will help you. Just sack up and get ready to 3 on that next lip. Get comfortable speed going and dont be backseat. Be ready for the lip cause timing is what can hurt you on a 3, dont start your spin to early, wait til you know your skis have left the snow. Just do it pencil style first to get the rotation down. you can bring steeze later when you are landing them like every time. imagine just running up to a cliff and doing a 360 on your feet and that is basically what u do on skis, but faster.
As far as crashing, it will happen no matter what usually if you are pushing yourself to new tricks. Just immediately get out of the way of the landing. If your ski is there, just move away first, and make sure its clear, then go grab it. if someone hits it and wrecks its their own fault. Just make sure your body is way clear always.
i also hate falling on landings especially if you lose a ski cause then youre like walking back up the landing to get it and feel like someones def gonna hit it not realizing youre there and then either you or them or both end up getting fucked up. bad times.
definitely start with a 360, theyre so easy if you commit. and ski the park with a buddy who will spot for you and stand on the jump and x it off if you fall so people wont hit it while yorue down.
and dont worry about shit talkers, every park has them and theyre usually the kids who cant throw shit.
woops sorry my bad a_dubs....I saw where you wrote "quit skiing so i thought you were just being an asshole so i yelled at you, but I didnt notice the part where you said you were just kidding..so ahhh ya sorry for getting pissed, i jsut hate when kids say shit to people learning.
Ironically, they're the ones who usually fuck people up by sitting around everywhere. I almost jumped on one the other day, but I saw him right before I committed to the jump.
I'd try learning to spin a 3 off of the smallest jumps there. Mammoth has such a great variety of jumps, you should be have to find something ideal, like a 5' table.
As for people getting pissed if you fall on a jump, (a) I don't think there are many people like that (everybody with balls falls); and (b) fuck those people anyway. I don't care if you're name is Pep Tanner Pollard Morrison, you shouldn't get bitchy when someone falls on a jump unless they cut you off or hit a jump when it wasn't clear.
helmets dont help, and seriously just dont jump any more. 6 major concussions is insane. honestly skiing is fun but not worth it.. 6 MAJOR CONCUSSSIONS!!! im iin awe that you can even talk.
before you go, just shout "everybody, I am a beginner, so give me so make sure i am clear of the landing first!", the make sure everybody says OK and/or promises
and if you can, try to get someone record you saying this and post it on NS
buddy, its softer landing but if you dont really know how to look over your shoulder to spot (which isnt the easiest thing to master) then it is harder
Definately start with a 3. Backflips take pow to learn, and its february haha. For your three make sure you dont spin too early (like somebody said) or you'll hit the lip of the jump (this is common haha). When you spin, look over your shoulder and bring your torso around so that its facing the direction you want to land, your skis will follow. As for the switch thing, just ski down an easy green run the whole way switch to get comfortable with it.
im in the same situation, except i cant find any smaller jumps to try to 3 on, I can 180 on flat and small hits (not jumps)and almost 270 off some tiny jumps, but jusat like with biking I cant seem to get any closer to a full 3 off of a bigger jump than a small jump.
if u fall just like tell someone next to the ramp to put their poles up so people kno ur down. dont worry about people getting pissed. u gotta fall sometimes its how u get better
I have to say, If you do ski with a friend, they are an asshole if you fall in a landing and they dont mark that your there or warn people. I had comited on a box where a kid was standing to the side looking up the mountain. as I got on the box, I saw his friend sitting in the middle of the landing. I tried to jump to the side but ended up slinding off sending my ski into the fallen kids back.(he was like 10) I fall on my side and knock the wind out of me and try to yell at the kids friend to warn people when his friend is down in the landing. I got up and went to apologize to the hurt kids mom and tried to explain to her to tell her sons friend to warn people next time. even though it was the friends fault, I still felt like an ass.
I totally hear ya on the fear of having someone land on you. Unfortunately, I ski alone, and when I'm hitting "blind" jumps. I usually let everybody go ahead of me... especially if I'm going to try a new trick. It sucks when you're riding on a busy day, since the snowboarders just come out of nowhere and will cut in the line for the jump, but that's why you should ride during the week if you can.
Or... usually jumps are lined up back to back... so, at least if they see you hit one jump and not hit the other one, they'll know you fell... that's how I know not to go for a jump after someone went ahead of me.
Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions, I'll be sure to use them. Oh, and about the helmet thing, I have always worn one, and I even ski in a full face now (my mountain biking helmet) just because I feel a lot safer in the trees, and I like the confused looks it puts on peoples faces.
