I'm 5'8, 158lbs, and am a very aggressive skier. I live on the East Coast, and ski 60%park, 40% all mountain. Right now I'm riding 167 Chronics, which are my do everything ski. I love them in the park, and they kill it all mountain. I picked up some 174 Scratch Fs from SAC and still havn't mounted them. I dont want a floppy park specific ski. so I'm going to keep my chronics. But my question is about the Scratchs. They have an 84mm waist, and would be my ski on a rare east coast pow day. I dont ski powder much at all, so I dont think i need a super fat ski, but I've only ridden pow before w/ my chronics. which are 78mm in the waist Will I notice a big difference between a shorter 78mm waist, and a longer 84mm waist?, or would it be to my benefit to trade them in toward a wider ski? Any input welcome, thanks.
I'd trade them in for something else if possible. Sure, you'll notice a difference, but the FS is no powder ski. My narrowest ski is 89mm at the waist and I haven't even ridden them yet this year because they're too narrow to use most of the time. Granted powder is fun to ride on any ski, but if you have extra money and nothing better to spend it on, a dedicated powder ski could be the way to go.
ok cool thanks. I'm just afraid that the Scratch and the Chronics are too simliar, and I dont need 2 skis that will basically perform the same. More opinions would be great too, so let's hear them.
from what ive read about the chronic its very similar to the scratch cuz my scratches rip all over also...but yeah the little extra width would help but its not gunna make uber difference
Those scratches are a lot of effort to ski in pow...They're much better as a park ski if you like a little stiffer park stick, or as a crud/day or two after the storm ski.
