CU vs. CSU

I am from Montana and want to go to school in Colorado, but I can't decide if I want to go to CU or CSU. I am interested in environmental engineering and I love to hike in the spring/summer and of course ski in the winter (basically I love the outdoors and want to spend all my time out there). I am checking out both schools on Wednesday to get a feel, but I want to know what really goes down. Let's have a big old squabble about which school is actually better, and perhaps a valid point will help every once in a while (i.e. not CU sucks cuz they're all fags or some shit like that). And by the way thanks.

Among many other reasons, the fact that you say you are into outdoors makes me think that CU would be the better option for you. Boulder is the outdoor adventure capital of the state- you will find way more people here in Boulder who are hardcore into the outdoors than you will in Fort Collins.

you will also find way more people who say they are and then think the drive to vail is a day in the great outdoors. there are plenty of people at both schools who love hiking, the big difference is distance to skiing, and the amount of people who ski park. both of which favor CU, though there are a couple groups of us in fort collins.

Yeah there are people in both places that are outdoor posers for lack of a better term. I can say with certainty that there are far more trad climbers, ice climbers, mountaineers, kayakers, backcountry skiers, legitimate mountain bikers, and endurance athletes in Boulder than in Fort Collins.

actually it doesn't, it's just harder to get into as it's smaller, but they're academically very similar. they'd like you to think that though...
in fact, CSU typically does better in engineering competitions nationally.

yeah, but i would say most of those guys don't go to CU though, they just use boulder as a home base. as for the party scenes boulder has more yuppies, CSU is more "hick" i guess, though that's not really a good term for it, but it's very moderate politically while boulder's liberal. there are definitely some legit mountain bikers in fort collins though, but not many good climbers.

ok, im just going off what my friend said, who climbs professionally, he was looking at moving to boulder, instead he did his best matt foley impression and lived in his van down by the river (or wherever else he parked). he did roll through boulder in december though.

yeah, they also have a really good journalism program and one of the best vet schools in the nation

ft. collins is cool, but CSU is almost entirely made up of kids from colorado. CU has more kids from all over which is a good thing in my opinion. CSU is also a long ass drive to all the ski resorts. Its closer to steamboat than any of the others. CU is generally better academically as well.

it's like a 30 minute longer drive to the mountains out of fort collins.

you'll have fun at either place you go, but they definitely have their differences. boulder is a little more expensive and far more yuppy, and also one of the only places where you can see a dreadlocked vegan with a leather prada purse driving an m-class benz. ft collins is further away from everything (ie denver and skiing, although cameron pass is close and super sick), smaller, and every once in a while you'll see a truckful of jackasses wearing full-on cowboy gear even though none of them has ever set ass on a horse. both have their dope parties, retarded frat boys, readily available drugs and sex, and tons of other crazy shit too.

if you're focusing on an education, do your homework on the different majors. CSU doesn't have an architecture major and their art program blows horse nuts. their construction management program is really good for many reasons if that's your thing.

i picked CSU because i've lived in colorado my whole life and always hated everything about boulder, but don't let my personal bias sway you.

he wants to be an environmental engineer not vet nor construction worker.
im going to CU next year for aerospace engineering. if you like the outdoors i would go to CU. if you visit both campuses you will know what i mean.

umm construction management has nothing to do with being a construction worker. though you could do that right now and make $25 an hour without going to college. there are plenty of people at both schools that are intersted in outdoors, just a lot more park skiers at CU.

The drive to ski from FoCo isn't that bad, did it twice a week the entire season. Additionally, CSU has one of the best Natural Resource schools in the nation. CSU will be cheaper as well, both in tuition and definitely housing.

if you're in boulder on weekends, when are you going to ski? you'd actually have to choose between girls and skiing cause summit county is just as bad as school of mines.

well that's good for you, but i don't think many people can make your situation happer, i couldn't, i don't have a car. and besides im lazy and cheap, so i'd rather couch surf summit county on weeks then make two trips to the mountains. also, i do fine with the girls here in CSU durring the week, so no need to go to boulder and deal with all the yuppies.

dang, this is such a hard decision. luckily i have another year to ponder because i am taking a year off.

cu makes sense academically seeing how im interested in engineering, but i'm sure csu has a good program, right? i am not a huge fan of fake-ass yuppies, and do like more chilled out people. financially, i think csu would be a bit cheaper. and finally, after visiting, i liked boulder more than foco, just because of the surroundings, you just drive right up that mountain and there is stuff to do everywhere.

it all makes for some serious "soul searching". argh, where do i want to go. i hate decisions.

it depends what your looking for in engineering, CSU's computer engineering is kinda a joke, but the mechanicle and electrical engineering programs are good. (our mechanicle department seems to regularly beat CU in various engineering competitions)

finally made my decision the other day. it was so hard tho cuz i loved both. I decided on CU cuz im goin into engineering and its closer to the mountains, but ill admit im nervous about the "yuppies" in boulder. Ive heard they were bad but everyone seemed friendly while i visited but we will see.

You should also consider Colorado School of Mines in Golden. Great Engineering programs and like 30 minutes from skiing. Guy to girl ratio is maybe 7:1 though

There are cool people in Boulder. For the record, yuppie comes from the acronym y.oung u.rban p.rofessional. College students cannot really be called yuppies, as they are not professionals.
