Hellbent with FKS 185?

I have a connection that can get me a pair of 189 hellbents for pretty cheap and I have a pair of fks 185's lying around. While Chris Benchetler was here for the Red Bull Cold Rush I saw him rip the 185 heel piece out of two pair of rockered Ak Enemy's. I've heard that the mount pattern on the binders is too narrow for the K2's but I was wondering if there is anything you can do to stengthen the mount or keep the heel piece from ripping out?

u should try and trade them for some deadbolts
cause the pattern is wider

basically when you mount the ski you drill oversize holes then screw in a metal plug or coil with the correct size hole in it, then you mount the binding into that. what it does is give a larger surface area providing more resistance from pulling. to be honest i wouldn't worry about it to much though. unless you're really pushing it really hard you most likely wont have that problem. i have fks's on my skis and have yet to pull anything.

But the problem with the hellbents is that theyre super flexy so that means more flexing under the binding unlike normal skis which arent that flexible. More of a chance to rip ouot. Def go with the helicoil, could cost a bit more but worth it

I was asking myself the same question, and I mounted them on the fujis. The one problem that I encountered was that the helis come way close to eachother on that close of a mounting patern (especially the 2 front screws) and if ever u do rip those out, u're gonna find urself with a huge whole, nothing u can do for remount. You can try all 4, but I would suggest just heli the 2 back screws and leave the other 2 on a normal mount. 2 should be plenty. For the record I didn't heli mine and they're fine.

just mount them, if they rip out, then coil um. duh. but those fir K2s dont have mounting plates, and do like to pull out. its kinda dumb to use sucha soft wood and no mounting plate.

But it's cheaper, they really should have a mounting plate though, ditto that for JP vs. Juliens.

I would definitely heli-coil those if I were you. The fks heelpiece has a very narrow pattern resulting in a lot of stress in one spot. The new px pattern is fine as well as the Salomon pattern. If you want a burly binding that will hold well snag a pair of this year's px14s

Never Heli-coil a brand new ski, if they rip out then do it. Heli coils alter the structure and a ski is much more prone to breaking where the two rear heli coils are, especially with a really tight hole pattern like a FKS, it may also void your warranty
