Lookin for a good digital camera...

So the searchbar didn't really help...
I'm lookin for a sleek and slim sort of digital camera for college next year. I'm not sure at all where to start in this category, more of a ski-only kind of guy. I'm not looking to be a pro photographer (sp?) so keep that in mind with price and quality. I would like to spend around $200 but I figure I will probably end up around $300 or so. What kind of pixel quality should I be looking at? Any brands particularly better than others? Let me know if you know of any good deals as well, I'm gonna go shoppin a bit tonight to take my first couple looks at cameras. Any help would be appreciated.

i just got a canon sd600 to carry around all the time and it's perfect to just slip in a pocket or jacket. it's the size of a deck of cards, maybe a little thicker. i wasn't looking for the best features or anything, just a good price and compact. i'd suggest going to best buy or circuit city just to actually get a look and feel, and then look online for cheaper prices.

i like the look of those canons. what is the diffence in the quality. i see some have bigger screens and stuff, but are they pretty similar in pic quality?

one main reason i chose the 600 (besides price) was the viewfinder. i felt it was necessary for my camera to have a viewfinder even if it's not great, just in case the sun is really bright and you can't see the screen. i just like to be able to use either the lcd or actually look through. it has 6 megapixel which i think is fine because chances are, if im gonna make any prints, they won't be larger than a normal sized print.

and as much as i hate to say it because it makes it sound like a girls camera, the thing is sexy.

dont use the viewfinder. when you use the viewfinder it is not want you are taking a picture of. if you look of the front, th eye piece is above the lens. so when you take a picture, you image will be framed down. that is called a range finder.

yea i know it's not like using an slr, but i just like to have it as a reference in case i can't see the lcd.

I agree with everyone saying Canon. I had a Canon s400 that lasted me a few years. It was bomb proof. It finally died when a girl knocked it into a full solo cup full of beer. I just got a Canon SD630 which is identical to the sd600 which someone mentioned having, but the screen on the back is 3 inches and not 2.5. There is no viewfinder, but I never used my viewfinder once on the s400. Personal preference. The sd630 is about 40$ more than the sd600 and aside from the bigger screen, the exact same.
I got mine from abesofmaine.com for 250$ and free shipping. use cnet.com to find the most reputable dealers
