have you seen much difference in sage's part's over the last five years? no. except maybe the wine him and micah drink on their sketchy lame bus rides far off in the middle of nowhere. tgr should be travel agents and not film makers.

here is a scenerio: you take sage and sammy to a bc jump and let them hit it. sammy, sw7 sw9 sw5 5 cork seven and so on. sage, r3 3 7 and maybe a five. the guy does not progress the sport. fluid 3s off of new lines just isn't progression, it just isn't.

sorry you guys can't see the light.

Im a huge park rat, and I still know of sage well. I remember reading the article about him in freeskier a couple years back when he said he went from washing dishes and just getting by one day to filming with TGR and cork 7ing pyramid the next. hes the shit.

some would say that there is far more to skiing than just skiing down the mountain. stop trying to hold our sport back by saying what is 'more important'. sage would be the first person to tell you that jumps are just as important as ripping big lines. we need balance in our sport, and saying that jumps are worthless is just as bad as a park rat saying big lines are worthless.

and to the thread starter, how the fuck do you call yourself a park rat if you've never seen teddy bear crisis, which sage is in.

lifestyle does have something to do with it. jussi isn't just a bc/big mountain rider, he's doing shit like the xgames too. sage doesn't do that shit and that's not what he's about. not every skier has to be pushing the progression of the sport to warrant them a good or great skier. sage is a huge inspiration to a lot of people because he started as a ski bum and blew up, because he can ski anything. if you care about jumps and spinning then i understand thinking that he's not 'progressing' the sport. but if you look at big mountain skiing and how sage ranks among the best, i'd say a promodel shouldn't be out of the question.

there are many people who don't deserve a promodel and have one. (i.e. MSP) but sage shouldn't be lumped into that category.

and just because i'd rather watch afterlame than a tgr flick, doesn't mean i don't respect what sage/tgr/etc. are all about.

Okay, so I dont follow pros lifes, I dont play fantsy freeride, I do my own thing. What does it do for me if Colby West gets first in Aspen or
Charles Gagnier wins some big event. It doesnt, Im glad as long as they progress the sport. I dont know to many backcountry skiers cause well, Im not into backcountry at all, I find it borning to watch and they do not publicize backcountry that much, so Im not going to spend my time digging around for usless knowledge to impress some kids on the internet. I would rather spend more of my free time actually skiing.

all the personality stuff you speak of. i don't care too much about these guys personalities, just how their skills are on the hill...you seem to care a ton about their personality. you act as though sage grew up in the streets of brazil with hiv and the gentle hand of god swooped him up and gave him a new life. the guy grew up in the nice town of bend skiing 100+ days a year; he wasn't doing so bad. and as far as the dishwashing thing, give it up. the term ski bum was coined decades ago and not too many tissues were raised when guys were taken from the dishpit to the pros during the days of blizzard of ahhs.

sage is a great skier, just not doing much for the eye anymore in my opinion. and as far as jussi and the x games; that shit is probably for contract purposes. jussi's part in mdp is ten times better than all sage footage put together, hands down; sw bs 10, big mountain lines, everything. sage had what this year?

I didn't say jumps are worthless. I definitely don't think they are more important than riding down big mountains. The original poster was thinking of backcountry skiing as nothing more than jumping, which it is not. And looking at skiing this way most certainly does not hold it back.

Ever watch high life? There is a section in that movie with Sage hitting cliffs in the 20 foot range. It consists of skiing lines into cliffs and then spinning. There is a sequence of 3-4 in a row where he skis the line cleanly, hits the cliff, and spins one way, then skis another line cleanly, hits a cliff, and spins the other way.

Wrong. I've never seen Jussi kill a big line the way Sage does.

This thread started out about Sage, he deserves a pro model as much as anyone in skiing. People don't respect pro surfers until they can dominate pipeline. Pro skiers need to be able to kill Alaska in order to be looked at as on the highest level of the sport. Other things are important too, but universal respect for someone's abilities will not come before a big Alaskan line.

indatrenches, i'd like to see you keep up with Sage in AK. then come and talk shit. he's a GREAT skier. i'm so sorry you'll never be nearly as good as him, but get over it and just enjoy skiing. if you don't think he deserves a promodel, wow- congratu-fucking-lations- don't buy it, but the people at Rossi, who i can promise see more prospective and wannabe "big names" than you do, feel that he deserves a promodel and, frankly, i trust their judgement over yours. the people making a decision like this might not ski with him everyday, but by now they're very aware of the fact that he's a great skier.

i'm a huge fan of Seth Morrison. i thin it's safe to say that most of us on here have tremendous respect for Seth, but honestly, what has he done over the past three or four years that's really been promodel-worthy? not any huge progression, he's not keeping up with the younger crowd, yet he still has a promodel... for the sixth year next season. sure, it's partially a marketing thing, but also because he's a fucking phenominal skier. sure, Sage isn't Seth, but i think he's one of the few who could keep up with Seth.

if you really think Sage doesn't deserve a promodel, prove it by showing us what you think the criteria ought to be. until then, i still consider being one of the best skiers around plenty reason to give him a promodel.

k i don't know where you came up with all that personality shit, all i was say is that they have different backgrounds and different outlooks on their sport and the way they ride. i've seen sage do big spins so it's not that he can't do it, he choses not to and i think that deserves as much respect as people whos ski careers are spin-to-win contests. no one deserves more or less credit or respect than anyone else here. what about jamie pierre? people respect him and think he's progressive. why? don't ask me, he throws himself off huge cliffs and has somehow lived through it all. as for his skiing skills, they're mediocre in the whole scheme of things.

i understand that you don't think sage is being progressive, that's your opinion. and ya i'll agree with you that he's no where near jussi/andreas/etc. but i can't think of one skier who could compare to those guys in terms of comp. results and the incredible segments they turn out each year. regardless, i don't really care if sage gets a promodel. i think he's sick; i don't think that throwing huge spins in the bc is what should be the criteria for a promodel. a lot of people like to watch him ski (including myself) and have a lot of respect for the guy. that's all i'm saying.

oh, and you mentioned dirksen earlier...when was the last time he spun over a 7? that's not his thing. he does smaller stylie-as-fuck spins and rides big mountain. i don't see a huge difference here.

Someone should go and watch Wind-Up Films "The Flying Circus"...Sage's part in that was pretty sick...still is.

The first day I remember he filmed with us he stuck a 5 on a step up...landing switch into pow...that was 7 years ago...not too many people were doing that back then...especially on a pair of 4 year old Salomon 1080's...

You certainly have every right to not take an interest in backcountry skiing. Many people here think about more than just the park, and there are many deserving skiers out there whose specialties lie in terrain that is not man made. Do you believe Seth Morrison deserves a pro model? When was the last time you saw him get filmed in the park. Sage is one of the truly great skiers in the world. I personally think he deserves a pro model, and I'm glad he is finally getting one. I understand about wanting to spend more time skiing than researching, but Sage is one of the most visible guys out there. I find it hard to believe you've never seen him in a movie or in a magazine.

Does anyone know anything about the ski yet? Dimensions? When it will be out?

i'm not necessarily trying to argue anything. i don't see what sage being 'un-progressive' (just because he doesn't throw big spins in the bc) has to do with him not deserving a pro-model. people know his name, they'll buy the ski.

and as for dirksen and the rest of the snowboarders go, sadly, skiing can't and shouldn't even begin to be compared to snowboarding which i know you know.

oh ya, and i wish durtschi would get the chance to charge lines in alaska. people would be blown away.

Why do you have to be "progressive" to get a pro model? Please explain? Isn't it enough if you're better than maybe 99,999% of the whole skier population?

Think about it: Coombs (R.I.P) has a pro model. He didn't do any grabs or "tricks" for that matter. Just good old skiing on the ground, maybe a few drops here and there .Still, he was better than maybe 99% (if not 100%) of the posters here.

Seth Morrison did not do well in the last big mountain contest he entered. He entered the Crested Butte one a couple of years ago. Seth used to do pretty well back in the day, but even he never won one. Just because some guys finished ahead of him does not mean they are better skiers. Jon Olsson won a contest in sweden afew years ago, and beat a bunch of guys who are much better big mountain skiers than he is. Jon gained alot of respect that day from the European big mountain community, but no one considered him a better skier than the other guys who entered.

Everything except AK lines huh? Skiing big lines is a huge part of the sport. Huge and multifaceted. Saying he would blow him away is a huge statement. You also spoke of how Sage's parts don't look that much different from 5 years ago. How about Seth Morrison? Big mountain skiing is incredibly difficult to progress, that's why stuff from 1999 is still incredible today. It's much easier to see progression in the park scene. If you know anything about big mountain skiing you should know that. Do Seth Morrison's segments look different from ski movie 3? Not nearly as much as the jibbers do. It does not mean he is not pushing the sport, it just means the area his is pushing is much more difficult to progress.

I shouldn't even be talking about this. Anyone who doesn't think Sage deserves a pro model has a lot to learn. It's good to see most of the people on this website get that.
