Going out West for the first time

I'm leaving sunday for alta. This will be my first time skiing anywhere, but the east coast and i'm stoked. I was just wondering if the altitude adjustment is a problem, and any suggestions that people might have for things to bring. We'll be there for a week and are staying at the Gold Miner's Daughter at the base. From the looks of things Alta is huge so where is a good place to start, and what are good trails to ski there. Any advice would be great.

Drink lots of water for the first few days and avoid alcohol and soda for a few days too. If you start to get really sick see a doctor. It shouldn't be too bad. Alta is a great place to ski. Check out Snowbird as well. Such incredible views as compared to what we get in the east. As for best places... I haven't been in awhile (Going back April though!!). Check out Mineral Basin at Snowbird. Have fun and enjoy the views.

Avoid water and drink lots of beer. No, don't do that. Defiately hydrate, the altitude affects people differently. My friend gets bad altitude sickness.

alta is alot different from alot of mountains because you traverse like everywhere. that is how you find the good shit. Just find some traverse trails and follow them forever until you find some good snow. I found a few natural jumps at alta. I liked snowbird alot better cause the tram is just sick and you get a really long run.

is alta even tall enough to get altitude sickness? Do you live at the bottom of a 10,000 foot canyon or somethign?

Alta is at about 8500 feet. Enought to make you feel shitty if u decide to get drunk ur first night up there.
alta doesn't have a park, so don't even think about bringing ur jibbing sticks, the bird has one, but it sucks balls.
these are big mountains, theres lots of shit to do, just poke around...
gunsight is the shit, and i think were calling for snow...
Meanwhile the east is getting hammered. heh.

Yeah I'm not going there to ski park. I've got Lizzies which is what I'm bringing. Any tips for bringing skis on the plane we've got a big bag to bring them in should we just pack clothes and stuff around them, and I'm 16 so I don't plan on getting wasted out there.

Yeah, when i went out there, i just packed all the shit i could around my skis to keep em safe. Cause they do throw them around a bit on the planes.

Besides drinking plenty of H20(bring an empty Nalgene or something and fill it up once you get thru security so you can stay hydrated on the flight-cuz that part can def take it outta ya)it helps to snack often to keep your blood sugar up. Eat at the time change dinner time etc to help u adjust faster. I've been to Utah and Colorado etc never had altitude sickness-bring Tylenol PM or something if you have trouble w/ the diff time zone-gettin sleep-if you're tired from skiing tho shouldn't b a problem. Just be smart about it.

Be careful about packing clothes around the skis/ bindings. If the ski is moved around a lot the clothes could tear. Towels or rags works well too.

oh yeah, sounds like you have a good idea going with packing in your ski bag-when I ski travel I have 3 bags: backpack which is my carry on, Boot bag, and ski bag which I pack skis AND any clothes and other stuff i wanna bring in. Makes it so easy gettin in and outta the airport that way. The lighter the better n you'll be glad you did!
