the glue that holds the grips on is heat activated so if you turn the sink on hot water and hold it under they will just pull off after a minute or so. once you get them off keep the warm water running on the grips until you have finished cutting your poles. then replace the grips on the poles right away and the glue will dry again.
get a pot of boiling water, dip the grip of the pole in there for few minutes.
go to a door, open it and stick the pole between the top of the door and the top of the door jam grip up, hold the door with your foot like 3/4 of the way closed and wedge the pole towards the door hinge side, not just pull down on the pole till the bottom of the grip catches and swipes it right off. make sure not to pull to hard to fast cuz that can hurt in many different places haha. after you cut the poles with a hack saw, spray the end with some spray adhesive so the grip slides on easily and holds it there for good.
