i called my local steel company and they said for $35 i can have a solid 20ft long, 2in wide, 5/8inch thick bar of steel,is 5/8 inch thick strong enough to weld/make into a rail?

Your not gonna do much with just over a half inch. Get a pipe thats at least an inch and you'll be able to do something.

5/8 solid steel. You would be better of with somting hollow 5/8 would be heavy as shit.

I'm not sure but it sounds like he's saying its a hollow bar but the steel is 5/8" thick.

fuck 5/8 inch? Thats thick as hell, I would say 1/4 inch or 3/8 at the most. 20ft of 5/8 would be heavy as fuck.
