Does anyone know when you record a sound, can u put it as your ringtone?

And if a friend sends me a ringtone as a text message that he got for free from a website, can i set that as my ringtone?

When i went to read the text message, it would only let me save it into my sounds.

yeah i know that, but i didnt go onto the site, my friend texted me the sound from a different site.all i need to know is if i can put a saved sound that is on my phone as my ringtone.
