remember a while ago when mac sued microsoft for having a monopoly in the computer industry. well mac won and microsoft was broken up. that was a big loss for microsoft. however, do you think that bill gates, the man who built the most profitable company in the history of this country to date (since then walmart has made more money) would just let his empire be torn apart by the law? do you think that he wasn't smart enough to figure out a loophole?
the loophole came a couple yeas later when mac was on the verge of bankruptcy. it looked like mac was about to collapse, and microsoft stepped in and bailed them out. yes, microsoft is the largest owner of macintosh. therefore, microsoft makes the most profit when macs stock goes up and mac is still here largely due to microsoft. so microsoft essentially still has a monopoly over the industry. surely, mac has no complaints about the fact that microsoft borrowed incoorperated some of their own features from macs into their new opperating systems. the truth is, microsoft has been behind the recent explosion of macs. microsoft uses mac to sell computers to a different consumer, and the recent mac boom is very intentional by microsoft.
also, microsoft is still the bigger company by a huge margin. think about it, almost every business in the world runs microsoft. we may not see this market in our houses, but microsoft is making 10x more money in businesses than mac does int he house, so to say that mac has a better idea is just false. with vista, microsoft surely hopes to bring their computers back into the households that mac has taken, and reestablish the compnay they once were, but are fully aware that they will never legally be microsoft coorperation. they are now a global computing empire, and ironically (due to mac) are a much bigger company than they once were.
also, note that mac is moving back towards its original audience (scholors and graphics). they are advertising with commercials on tv stations directed at youth, while microsoft is advertising on national news.
the truth is that microsoft is and always will be a massive global organization and mac will always be a small specialized branch of microsoft. while teenagers are unsure about vista, neerly every adult (who typically have enough money to buy computers) has a possitive impression of vista. while microsoft makes a profit off of macintosh products, they make more profit off of microsft products, and therefore it is int heir greater interest to sell their products. basically, microsoft is the better company. the mannagement and reputation is there, and i think it is fair to say people are rooting for their success. the resistance is (in my mind) more of a fear of change than a legitimate arguement
