Right?, coz that was the whole thing that started it, diversity and anger at the government?

All that other crap is just not punk, rock maybe but not punk, dont get me wrong im not saying i hate it i like it a lot its just not real original punk, i dont see an argument in this topic either, unless im reallly ignorant.

by definition i dont like 'real' punk. and who are you to say what 'real' punk is. is it signing about getting stoned? is it about the government? Is it something else? punk can be a bunch of different things. it can be your lifestyle, beliefs. there really isnt a 'real' punk. thats like saying pedro isnt a real baseball player because he gets paid a lot unlike the pioneers of the sport

So I have a few questions.

Suppose a band releases a political ''punk'' song. It carry's a political message, it is written in the punk manner, using punk instruments, lots of distortion, etc. It's a punk song by your definintion through and through. Now suppose they use exactly the same song, all the same notes, distortion, vocal inflections but they change the lyrics. Now the song is about Pumpkin Pie. Is this song a ''Punk'' song? If not, its not in the music.

Now suppose they take the lyrics from the first song but write them to an an accoustic guitar, piano and a chello. It's not the punk music style at all. Is this song a ''Punk'' song? If not, its not in the message.

So if its not in the music and not in the message. What makes the song punk exactly?

In my opinion its all about the music, if you change the lyrics, its still a fucking punk song.

We had a horrible long thread about this on our university newsgroup.

Yes, 'punk' started out as purely political, and nothing to do with the music. The music itself was merely a brand of rock. But now, like it or not, 'punk' has come to define the sound of the music.

Maximumsushi - I get what you're saying totally. You could have N-Sync do a pop-cover of an Anti-Flag song - would it still be a 'punk' song? Equally, Anti-Flag could do a punk-cover of an N-Sync song - would that be a 'punk' song? It's all to do with how you classify the song - by music or lyrics. Yes, there are very political bands like Propadandhi and Anti-Flag, which you could not call anything but 'punk', but then there are bands like NOFX and Lagwagon who have the same basic characteristics in sound, but at times have lyrics about all sorts of shit - are they not 'punk'? And then there and bands like The Vandals who are completely the opposite lyrically, but very good musically - where do they fit in?

Personally, I listen to music primarily for the sound of it. There are bands that I listen to who have a great sound but shitty lyrics. Then there are bands with awesome lyrics that otherwise I wouldn't really like. Of course, good music and good lyrics makes for a great band.

Its Different Scope.

You are all trying to define punk as according to what it was. Political outcry. As time went on the music genre diversified itself and things like more emotional music came out touching on things such as love. Though a political theme the genre was now much more diversified.

Take it a few years later.

Punk has gained rapid popularity, its fast 'edgy' sound are attracting alot of young people. This was recognized by record labels and thus bands like New Found Glory, Simple Plan, and Avril Lavigne appear and become extremely successful. This new marketed punk is often labled as bubblegum, in that it strayed from the original mission of punk - this new 'punk' was too soft, and poorly represented punks past.

So what does it all mean?
Punk went from being corporate and political criticism to being on MTV and every goddamn radio station.
True punk is often defined as something that is 'underground' little known, a hard sound, and does its own thing.

Thats what separate true punk from bubblegum punk. People like Avril are not individuals they are directed by their rec. execs. for the sake of profit.

Therefore, punk is by definition doing something for yourself, by yourself, for the sake of individualism.

For once lagwagon is somewhat correct. Punk didn't really grow out of anger at the government, it grew out of anger at authority in general, from parents to God. The pinnacle of anarchist punk would probably be Crass. But for once i have to agree that punk does usually speak out against authority and the government. I mean c'mon, if you hear a hardcore band singing all about how their girlfriends left them, you're not gonna take it as true punk right away, right?

^ BamBam and MaximumSushi both make good points, same with whomever said that there is only good music and bad music. The thing is that 'Importance' scales on a couple of different measuring sticks. If importance to you is what sounds good - dope. For many though, importance scales on a critical level, meaning that of music critisim, which is the disussion of music in term of its form and influence as well as how cool it sounds.

In that light, I gotta agree that punk is about the message, not just the music style. Same stands for Hip-hop for that matter. Hip Hop is all about the message of power and education and community, where Rap is the method that it comes across in.

to start, political punk bands are so full of shit. they think they're being oppressed by the government or some shit like that. give me a break. ever since punk has become a style, it has been dead. its fucking rediculous how kids are trying to get punk points by wearing chuck taylors or putting pins on their jackets. dont get me wrong, there is some good punk music out there, but most of it is just whiney frosted rat shit. its probably best if you just listen to what you like and dont give a fuck about style or whos punk or what. thats probably the most punk thing to do. or fucking murder someone. thats pretty punk.

yeah i dont find it too ofenssive, and why is everyone so mehmehmeh about a 'punk style' I LIKE PUNK AND STUFF BUT DONT WEAR SAFETY PINS AND leather shit and those studded arm bands i dont wear patches and so on, but yeah i just agree with there points of view and relate to them. i wear patches and pins but i dont wear leather. i wear the patches cuz i like the way they look and how, around here, they say 'i support a different scene' what about Justin Sane though? he is the singer for anti-flag and is as punk as they come now a days, but his solo career is just him and his acoustic guitar. its still punk, but its not hardcore like A Global Theat. Punk is a state of mind and a way of thinking, its not what you wear, what you say or how you say it.
