dont you think that the us open is the one big comp for the rookies. i mean jon winning the slope that was kinda unfair he should be competing in bigger comps. this is a chance for some one new to get noticed.
Actualy I am preety sure that is not what was inteded. it just became that. that's the whole point of an open. if you want a comp for the best skiers you make it an invite only event. like the JOI or X-games, And i think they should make it so that you can't enter an event after you win it. So Jon would not beable to enter slope next year, Charles wont be able to enter big air and Tanner wont be able to enter the pipe.
sure the point of open comps is that everyone can enter, so why would the pros be an exception to that rule? it's an opportunity for lesser known skiers to show their stuff against the best skiers in the world...
Anyone can enter and win the open. Other then the shity ass Xgames US open is the next biggest comp freeskiing has. So why only allow AM? and for that matter who is consider an AM?
agreed. look at competitions in other sports called the US open. in golf and tennis they are two of the biggest events out there. USFO should be a big name everyone goes type of comp, but anyone can enter and anyone can win.
and if you say pros can't compete, the comp becomes irrelivant. everybody will be like "oh yea, joe shmoe won, but there wasn't anybody good there, it was just all ams" Even if you're the best am, you're not gonna get as much media until you can step it up and play with the pros
i think this is the best way to have it. when i see the results and i see that some fellow ns'ers, kids my age, beat out guys like tanner rainville, that makes it more impressive in my mind. if it was just ams i wouldnt care about it because i dont know what the talent level is like. its about kids showing their talent against the pros.
You can't get "noticed" by winning the middle of wisconsin buttfuck open. The reason that you "get noticed" is because you beat the people who are already noticed. Typically there isn't any other venue where you can even get a chance to compete against established pro's.
i hear this same complaint every year. it works as it is, newcomers get a chance to prove themselves against experienced payed pro atheletes. what more can they ask for, chance of a lifetime
If they're good enough to get noticed, they will. And if they're THAT good they'll make it to finals and do alright. It's a pretty big prize purse, and what the pros make from their sponsors is a HUGE amount to not compete. I think Jon just won 7 G's, and I bet his sponsors like quadrupled it because he's the man.
yeah. in either 03 or 04 (i dont know which) is when schiller got his big break. any unknown that wins USO did it by beating literally the best in the world.
hahaha I'm not even gonna read any of the replies to this thread you're whole logic contradicts itself. If well known pro's didn't compete in the open it wouldn't be a very big competition and therefore wouldn't get the rookies very much exposure now would it?
also saying that the pro's should go compete in bigger competitions is pretty dumb to because US open is arguably the biggest competition of the season
umm, i hope your joking. its called the open because anybody could, in theory, win it. yea it has pre qualified athletes, but anyone can still beat them.
i agree with what everyone else has said, but also think about other sports. in golf and tennis and stuff, when the US open rolls around its not like they ask all the big names to stay home. this is no different.
no its definitly a good thing that pros are in it because it makes the "rookies" step up there game and they dont have to beat the pros and come in first to be noticed.the pros are there to make money so if a 3 pros get first and a rookie takes fourth he is most likely going to get hooked up.
