it doesnt matter, just remember each double adds a stitch. i could do your pattern just as easily im sure its just how i do it, it really doesnt make a difference.

Materials:
- I have both a 9mm hook as well as a 6mm. I prefer metal ones cuz they slide easy when in contact with yarn, AND apparently we have had a case of someone breaking their plastic hook while crocheting!?!? ur really strong bro....tone it down a bit.
- I prefer red heart yarn, because frankly, who doesnt? Just use the normal stuff at first, then later get into all the "extra fuzzy" stuff.
- scissors....remember safety when using these
- You will also need to use your eyes and hands
Steps (this is just my method that ive found most successful, so if it works for you YAY but if not...ur gay) for a thicker hat involving two strands of yarn:
-I use a 9mm hook when dealing with two strands...and make sure u are not crocheting too tight or too lose. You will know a happy medium when u feel one.
1. Chain 3 stitches and connect into a loop.
2. Crochet 6 single stitches into the center of the loop.
3. Do a double stitch into each of the single stitches....at this point when u count around your mini pancake, you will have 12 total stitches around. Here I like to take a small strand of a different color of yarn and stick it into the last stitch that i just made. This is a good way to mark where u will be ending each row as u continue.
4. NOW do one single stich, double stitch 6 times and u should end up where the marker is again! Note that we are going in sixes and that each new row will always start with a single stitch
5. Next do single stitch, single stitch, double stitch 6 times and AGAIN u should end at the marker!
6. now do single stitch, single stitch, single stitch, double stitch 6 times and end at the marker.
....u should be noticing a pattern now
7. Keep increasing 1 more single stitch before a double stitch for each new row.
8. Now after u have just finished the row where u just did 6 single stitchs followed by a double...SIX times....STOP. (at this point the pancake should be fairly flat. It does not and realy should not be perfectly flat tho. If it looks wrong, u'll notice and should start over)
Make sure u are still in line with the marker and if you are.......
9. You may now continue with ALL SINGLE STITCHS. This is where the hat will begin to curve down. Just keep going until it is your desired length....and this is where u can do whatever the hell u want...u can even CHANGE COLORS!! if u want.
so that is just the basic beanie....
if u want to use just one strand of yarn which i frequently do now...i use a 6mm hook and keep doing the single and double stitch thing until i finish the 9 singles per double row. Then i finish with all singles.
