hey, im getting a new car, or newER at least, i have an 86 benz right now and it blows in the snow, so i am getting a used outback, almost positive, any of you guys have them out there?
dont get one with over 90k miles on it, they have alot of problem. i ended up putting 600 or so in 2 years in mine before it died in Wyoming from a blow head gasket
I have a 99 Outback. Please don't buy that year. I've re-built the engine twice and that was before 65,000 miles. I've met a ton of other people with the same problems in that year. It's due to a leaking cam seal, but I've dumped nearly $3,000 in the motor just to keep it running while the rest of the shit breaks all over the car. It's insane. It leaks more than a quart every week. I put all new seals in the front, rear, re-built the oil pump, and I even had all four cam seals re-done twice. Looks like they need to put a sleeve in one of the cam cylinders, but even that's another $500. Then I can deal with the myriad of other problems. Go with 2000 or newer. Don't make the same mistake we did.
^ do you know if that is just outbacks or legacy wagons also? one of my friends has a 98 legacy and another has a 99 legacy. both have 150k plus and no major problems
i have an '02 outback and i couldn't ask for more out of it. i have a ski rack on top of it and the interior is so big that it's perfect for ski trips. it already has over 115,000 miles on it and it runs like a charm, i love it...
doooood. I think you're right. Avoid that and you're money. I have to say though, even though the fucking thing pours out oil, it still runs. My mechanic swears you can drive the thing 3,000 miles on a quart of oil w/ out burning it up. I'm here to tell you it's a fact. I do it every week.
I have a 99 outback and my dad has an 07 outback, and they both are great. his obviously is way nicer, they remade them in like 04 or 05 I think, and changed a bunch of stuff, but I still love mine and have had no problems with it
love mine, its kick ass in the snow. my friend has an older one than me, a '99 and has had non problems yet, and has 110,000 miles. they are great cars
i have a 95 legacy it has a small oil leak and just random stuff i have to fix evry couple of months but it has 165 thou on it and no major problems and it runs great in the snow.
yep same story here. i got a 99 Forrester (115K miles) about 4 months ago and i had the engine replaced as well as the tranny rebuilt. but its still leaking something so i have to bring it back to the shop.
I have an '02 Outback with the flat 6 engine and so far it's been really nice. I decided to try studded snow tires on it this winter and since I made that decision the car has been unstoppable. As long as I have clearance I can drive wherever the hell I want to in that car; it easily outdrives any other car I've seen in the mountains this year.
I'm guessing you're looking at getting a 4-cylinder though, so a review of my car wouldn't help too much. As people have already mentioned, the '99 models have some reliability issues. Subaru redesigned the EJ25 to switch from DOHC to SOHC, but I'm not exactly sure of the year off the top of my head (either '00 or '01). Try to get one from that year on, preferably with as few miles as possible--obviously. The only other problems I can think of that Subarus have is the occasional O2 sensor failure, which is an easy fix.
I recently bought a 2000 outback. It had high mileage when i bought it. 106k. I'm at 111 right now, not a singe problem with it. It's great in the snow obviously , AWD, lower center of gravity than an suv, and still has some weight to it because it is a big wagon. Tons of room. Just a little 4 cyl in mine, no get up and go. But an outback is made to be reliable and rugged, not fast. Oh yeah lots of room. Not going to lie they aren't the most pleasing thing on the road to look at. But once you are in snow or on a dirt road you will fall in love.
Driving an outback is like marrying an ugly rich girl. She'll take you anywhere you want, but there are some situations you don't want to be seen with it. Try rocking a scooby wagon on south beach.
1993 legacy wagon - put 200k on it without one major problem
1996 - outback wagon - 175k before selling it - not one major problem
2002 wrx wagon - bought it new in 2001 - not one issue after 100K miles - still kicks ass, but was a little small - this is my daily driver
2007 outback 2.5i - bought it new two weeks ago - studded tires, new skybox, tinted windows - a little bigger than my wrx, more room for toys - keeping this one in the garage and using it for longer trips
I heart subaru's - never had a major problem, just keep up to date on the oil, seals, belts, tensioners etc...and they last forever - ignore that shit and they bomb out like any other car
cheap to fix - cpmpared to VWs or Audis
run fast - moderate on the MPGs
