I was sitting in history class today and we were talking about the news. And I thought how completely clueless so many people are about worldwide events, like darfur. I bet if you ask 50% of americans whats going on in darfur they wouldnt have a clue. I mean, millions of people are affected, its like a holocaust going on RIGHT now. Think about it, its genocide against its on people, the sudanese government sent the janjaweed to rape and kill villagers, and burn their homes. Millions of people have been displaced and the death toll is around 400,000 (and its only been going on for 3 years). But thats not the point, the point is that now most people are more worried about brad and angelina, or who paris' new boyfriend is, am I the only one who is frustrated by the ignorance of the people worldwide? who would rather read about some stupid celebrity bullshit then somthing that is history in the making, like the darfur conflict?
yeah genocide was going on in iraq but we're there and all the hippies want us to get the fuck out....and go do what? go to stop genocide in darfur. nice.
Yeah I absolutely hate all those magazines like People or Star and the shows like inside edition that follow every little move a celebrity makes. And then there those ones for like disney channel stars gahhh some of the shit in those are ridiculous
hah, imagine for one second the shit Bush would get in if he sent however many soldiers to darfur (expect alot of casualties) which one probably make another draft, and put us further in debt. I do believe we can do TONS more to help out, because illness is a major killing factor in the camps they have set up. I would definantly like to see more help from foreign countrys (yeah you canada) because 85% of the relief efforts there are american.
pop culture sucks. this generation has been sending values and american pride down the shitter. as much as i love this country and what it stands for, if it keeps up, this country won't represent what it was made to stand for. i may end up moving away.
What's really sad about the media is the lack of coverage during the Rwanda genocide...900,000 people dead in 3 months and practically nothing was done about it.
The point is, Americans aren't the only ones. Global responsibility needs to be taken for the suffering of the people in Africa and Middle Eastern nations. We are bearing the brunt of everything and getting the blame for everything. Given Iraq has been a huge mistake and we have fucked that up permanently, there are other countries that really do need the help of developed nations who just aren't willing to give it.
Fuck the Darfur, the best example is the 4 million and counting dead Hutus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has anybody even heard of this? We have a day of reminder every year for the Rwanda Genocide, and this is almost 10 times the amount of people and has been going on longer (even today)
I disagree, I think we should compare and contrast every genocide. I'm sick and tired of this politically correct bullshit that "all genocides are the same...bad", where does it get to the point when you can't discuss it anymore, thats pbly a big reason why nobody knows about it.
Some people get more sympathy and recognition than others, some areas get more attention because of economic and strategic values, and others are different on philosophical basis.
Fuck them and all those other people, besides they're black. Not even kidding where the fuck is al sharpton for them? he should be in darfur not ruining the proffesional lives of three inocent white kids bc some jungle hooker cried rape. fuck!
yea seriously i dont fucking get celeberty gossip at all its just for people to feel good about themselfs i bet, like oh look so and so got caught with drugs he must be a full blown druggy i seriously dont get it its like get a fucking life and stop talking about people youve never even fucking met in your life except on a tv were they act out some one who isnt even them
In general, yes we definitely should compare and contrast genocides.
In relevance to this thread, I think we should just stick to the point that a lot of genocides go unknown whether it's 1,000 people or 500,000 people. The only reason I said it doesn't matter is because I was keeping it relevant to the media proportion of this.
because for most people, the news reporting on events the day before is the extent of their historical knowledge. the media tells you what to care about by what they report on.
Look at the holocaust, look at all the people that died. That's a huge and world-changing situation where we all learn about. But it's happening RIGHT NOW, history is being made. Where's the media? following some sensationalist storys and not covering the important history-in-the-making stuff (with exception of few news broadcasting stations). Maybe if the american public was more aware of things like this, there would be more aid for situations like these.
OK, being a 1/2 jew i can say this without being completely racist (1/2 racist, lol).
Do you think its coincidence that the holocaust gets the most publicity, and that jew's are one of the most influential people in the combined mediums? I think that this is a valid point, as you can ask many people "how many jews reportedly died during the holocaust" 6 million, ask how many slavs died in the same concentration camps, nobody has any clue (5 million).
I think the holocaust got the most publicity because it was during WWII and maybe the world wanted to show how evil hitler was, so they spread the awareness about what was going on. But people dont know about these poor people in darfur who get raped and killed for the same thing, and not very many people think its necassary to spread the awareness for this aswell. If you were old enough in 1940 you'd know DAMN well that the jews are suffering but the typical teen in america today doesnt know about Darfur because they watch news that wants to broadcast the things people want to know about like some bullshit paris hilton story instead of things we SHOULD know about like Darfur, like Rwanda.
