Ok, this is a real brief answer, but go to Compu-fix if you want an in depth one. Basically, any file you download may be labeled as a certain file type, or a certain size, but if it contains Malicious code (virus/spyware/badshitforyourcomputer) then it can infect your files, or open the way (through your internet) for more shitty files to come through and fuck your shit up!
