Anybody a firefighter?

aye? I've wanted to be for a while but my town won't hire me because they have too many people already. I can do fire training this spring if I want though I think. Next year, if I go to St Mikes, I'm going to do it for the school, but ya. Anybody? If so, where and how long have you been doing it?

Well by this summer I'll hopefully have done fire training through my town (assuming I can convince the chief to let me, though he's a friend, so I'm hoping it will work). Then next year, I'll be at a different college, one of them has a fire sqaud and otherwise, I'll be in another city. So hopefully I'll find somewhere that will need firemen.

Yep. Been a FF since 2008, EMT since 2001, and got on my county's Technical Rescue Team last year. Volunteer, looking to make a career out of it someday.

Yo guys I didn't want to make another thread but I need some help, I want to be a wildlands firefighter next summer before i go to college, but I honestly can't get some straightforward information from the DOI on training. I know i need S-130 and S-190 but it's all jiberish to me. I would love some help please

Didn't see that he just wanted it as a summer job. You don't just become a firefighter for a few months and then quit. They want people who are going to commit full force to protecting lives and property. The people you work with become your family so I've heard. They're not going to want some kid that just wants to make some extra cash. You either become a firefighter, or you find a different job.

I'm currently a volunteer at two different departments, I've been doing this for 5 years at one and 3 the other. If you're not willing to put in a massive amount of time quit reading now. To put it into perspective last test I took to hire less then 70ish people 6500 people took the test, your odds are not good. Start by trying to get into a fire program be it volunteering or at a community college in fire science. Get into a EMT program then a paramedic program. This is one of the hardest jobs around to get currently in my opinion right now and a very very frustrating process. If you have any more questions I can try to answer to the best of my ability seeing as I've been trying to do this for a while now.

Didn't read the post.....he said wildland. Aka forest firefighter. I am in Northern Ontario Canada. I took my SP100, and passed my WFX-FIT testing at the national standard. I don't exactly know what it takes in the states but depending on what state your in I'm sure it would be similar. All I can say is:

gym time.....start lifting because hosepacks are heavy, and so are mark 3 pumps. Legs and arms. Also cardio, but not running exactly. Most of the physical tests don't allow running because it injures potential cadidates. Find a hill, fill your pack with 65 lbs, and hike it every second day.

Learn to tie knots... the faster/most secure knots the better. Know how camp, and orient your self in the bush. Third is know basic forestry....what conifers are, how to use a chainsaw, how use a hunting knife, and how to deal with wildlife.

If your a bush kid.... go for it. If your from the city, then good luck.

I'm assuming you have volunteer firefighters in the states for rural areas prone to wildfire. It's a pretty big thing here in Australia because a good chunk of the country is ready to go up in flames in summer. I've helped protect the mountain when I ski in winter, and It's very rewarding.

my aunt is a badass firefighter on capitol hill in seattle. i have to give her so much props as maybe the most badass human i know. heard some crazy stories from here and i have to give her so much respect for what she does. it is a dangerous job, she has had coworkers die right next to her, my uncle (her twin brother) suffred a career and life changing injury (involved a tramatic brain injury) during his duties. it was crazy seeing such a strong dude be rendered so reliant on everyone around him. anyways, anyone that goes out on the daily and does this job is a complete g in my book and has my upmost respect. props to any firefighters out there!
