Open Relationships

So far in my freshman year of college, I've met all kinds of people that didn't exist in my life before. One thing that I've noticed that is very prevalent is that there are a lot of couples in open relationships (ie you can hook up with other people as long as your main emotional commitment stays with your partner). I've heard lots of debate about this lately, as some people think that ruins the integrity of the relationship, some couples have one partner who wants this kind of relationship and one partner who is very opposed to it, and others are using it and saying that it works greatly. Obviously jealousy is a big issue, but it also reduces the likelihood of getting bored or not being satisfied with just one partner, and I guess it could prolong the relationship in that sense. I was just wondering if any of you have had any experiences with open relationships and what your thoughts are regarding them.

I'm not for it. In my opinion, a relationship beyond friends (gf/bf) is something that shouldn't be done if it can't be held up to the standards of not cheating on the other person. Why bother?

i went into college with an open relationship and i regard that as one of the biggest mistakes of my life. we broke up a month into the semester. i still havent gotten over her and that was 4 months ago

I think that if you're making an emotional commitment, it should be a physical commitment too. It might work for some people, but I could never be in a relationship with someone if I knew that they were hooking up with other people

What exactly are "the" standards of not cheating? Everyone's opinion varies. The people in open realtionships obviously don't feel that they're cheating, per say.

Not that I'm for it at all, I'm just pointing out that they probably don't think it's "wrong".

and I realize that not everybody in open relationships sees it as cheating, which is why I answered the question in the first place, which was my thoughts on open relationships.

ever had a friend with benefits? i see it as kind of the same thing, with just a different name. cuz i don't think most people go from a normal relationship and one day one of the two is like, hey i wanna fuck other people, you can too. I think in most cases it was open from the beginning.

I actually know two couples who were in relationships, for a long time too, who decided to make them open after a while just because it wasn't working. One of them ended up becoming more of the "Friends with benefits" thing, but the other two still say that they are in love with each other and the lack of confinement and jealousy only serves to enhance that love.

I know I couldn't do it, anyway. Like being at a party with my boyfriend and looking over and seeing him make out with another chick...wouldn't fly. It would always be in the back of my mind, bothering me.

Open relationships contradict the meaning of a relationship because it's not really just a relationship between two people anymore.

I personally think it's the dumbest idea ever and it's a sign that your relationship is on the verge of falling apart.

Jealousy is a feeling we all know of, for me i get to attached to chicks and if they dont want only me then i will get jealous. There are girls that when we chill we have fun and only hook up, but i would never call it a relationship. I like being committed and treating her perfect, not for her to go out and get laid. I hate relationships driven by sex, even though that describes high school

definetly for it. think about it - if you have one main bitch who you can always count on fucking every sat or sunday night or whatever, and then have some other bitches on the side, why wouldn't you? college is all about getting pussy, and if anything else doing lots of different drugs. anyone who tells you else is either a commuter student or lives on their computer.

I have pretty much no jealousy issues whatsoever and I'm about as unpuritanical about sex as they come, so I'm all for them. I consider open relationships less dramatic, less expectation laden and more relaxed overall, long as you're honest about everything. Some people can't handle it, so it's not for them, some people can.

I 'm a greedy bastard, when I've got an ideal girl in my life I don't want to share. (like right now) To me an open relationship is really no relationship at all. I've got a buddy who had two "open" relationships in a row, he's having a really tough time now that he's with a girl that is absolutly perfect for him and can put up with his shit, but doesn't want the open deal-e-o.

Besides, do you really want to kiss someone who might have just had some random's bits in thier mouth??

Open relationships seem to work for me, because I'm on the road all the time for competitions/training, and I'm rarely at home in whistler for more than a week or two at any given time during the year. I can't expect someone to wait at home for me while I'm gone for 2 months. Plus, it's whistler. Very few people are faithful here. Low expectations = no disapointment.

Now if I didn't ski race, and lived anywhere else I'd probably be looking for something more. But I don't. This works just fine for now.

in a way it would become a competition to get with other people and it would be driven by jealously
