Actually, that was a really ignorant post. Have YOU ever had a friend (or close to 20 friends, as I have) killed by a drunk driver? I would assume not. He knowingly put himself and the lives of others at risk by driving under the influence. Why do you think the penalties are so high if you get caught (in the states, at least)?
I've been sooooo ridiculously drunk countless times, as many people on this site have, and yeah, I've made some dumb decisions while drunk (for example, skiing with a broken back), but driving with alcohol in my system has never even crossed my mind. Usually, if I know I'm going to be drinking, I'll either make sure I have a designated driver, or I'll crash at the house where the drinking is taking place and give my keys to either a sober person or have them locked up to where I can't get them until I'm sober.
I refuse to get in a vehicle with a person who is drunk, which leads me to my next point. Yes, I truly empathize with the deaths of the kids in that accident, but they also knew that they were putting their own lives at risk by getting into a car with an intoxicated person behind the wheel. I don't give two shits if they HAD to be somewhere - they should have considered that before drinking in the first place.
One case that I heard about that upset me more than just about anything happened in the lower mainland of British Columbia (Vancouver area) last year. A girl (who had to have been under the age of nineteen) used a fake ID to get into a bar. She got wasted, STOLE her friend's car, and ended up killing a 27-year-old man while driving drunk. She came out of it fine, and you know what her penalty was? No, not ten years in jail. She got 240 fucking hours of community service! That's complete bull shit! A friend of mine got over 500 hours of community service for petty theft and assault. Not only that, but they showed the bitch laughing with her friends on TV when she found out her "punishment". I was SEETHING, even though I didn't know the guy who died. Sure shows where priorities stand these days.
So you want my two cents? FUCK drunk drivers. I don't care who they are or what their excuses may be, but fuck all of them. I cut off all ties with one of my best friends for a while because he was consistantly driving drunk, even though I let him know how much it upset me and others. Yeah, he eventually quit and now does drunk driving talks for schools (grades 5-12), but that is probably the one thing that a person can do that will upset me more than 'most anything.
