Living in Vancouver

This thread is for anyone who is old enough that they work for a living and have to pay their own bills and rent. I currently live in NYC and am coming out to Whistler next month. We are spending 2 days in Vancouver to check it. I am seriously contemplating moving somewhere out west but need to live in or near a big city for work purposes(film/editng industry). How do you like living in Vancouver? Is it expensive to live there, is it easy to find work , etc. Any info would be great!! THanks!!

If you've got Film/Editing industry experience I don't think it will be too hard to find a job here, we have either the biggest or 2nd biggest Film industry in Canada here (Toronto may be no.1, not sure). If you are coming from NYC you won't find Vancouver cheap to live in, but it will be affordable by comparison.

Vancouver is by far the illest city on the earrfff. but only come here if you aint a pussy, can handle loads of rain, deal with high costs, can ride public transit, open to diverse peoples and ideas, aint gonna be a prick, like to party, down with trees, and enjoi livin with in spittin distance of skiin, ocean, urban lifestyles, and mo crakhedz then you can shake a stik at

It's extremely expensive by our standards, the most expensive city to live in in Canada, though probably less expensive than New York. It is also perennially ranked as the best place on Earth to live (generally we fight it out with Zurich, Switzerland for that honour). Oh, but you'll have to re-learn how to spell words like honour.

Work availability is by an on-industry basis; if you're a doctor or a carpenter, there are tons of jobs. In the film industry, I would assume that connections are the order of the day, so if you have any options, you're good. Otherwise I can't advise you as I am in no way connected to the industry (which is, however, a big growth one around here, especially for TV, because it's cheaper to shoot here than in a lot of other places).

Welcome to Hollywood North, as it's known up here. I'm sure the filming industry is very very competitive here as well, as it is a gateway to hollywood, so make sure you know what you are doing before you move. Lots of people end up leaving because they didn't come with enough resources to make a living and afford rent. After 5 years spent here, this city still amazes me in many many ways.

im from jersey and im planning on moving there when im older, ive traveled to many cities and vancouver is number one for millions of reasons you probably already know. I gota question about work too, anyone know what the engineering market is like? are there jobs?

Depends on what type of engineering. lots of capital projects and other construction right now has placed a very large demand on architectural and civil engineers as well as mechanical and electrical. Not sure about anything else. Although if you want to be guaranteed a good job, and I mean guaranteed, move to Alberta. Oilsands = ridiculous demand for engineers.

Alberta's wack, but it's a great place to make tons of money quick, only to get the fuck out after a couple of years and move to somewhere that isn't insanely weird.

Vancouver is a nice city, but you have to deal with a lot of bullshit to live here. Live here for a month, then decide if it's for you.
