i cant upload my new icon

i just made an icon for myself and its 50x50 pixels exactly, under 2k and i have it saved on my comp in .jpg and .gif format but when i try to upload it it tells me that the, 'format is invalid,' and nothing else, any suggestions on what to do, am i overlooking something stupid?

yea it depends what software you are making it with, areally easy way is with microsoft photo editor or something similar, click save as, and reduce the quality in the advanced menu
