so here i am sitting at home AGAIN on a saturday morning, wonderin why the f*CK im not skiing. in fact ontario is sooo far away from being ready to click in that Ontario's biggest resort, blue mountain is shutting down.
this is HORRIBLE news.
what is the earth telling us? i think as skiers we need to be listening to what we're being told and try everything in our power to preserve the earth so that we can continue enjoying the sport we all love so much. and not only for us but for future generations. id really hate to think that our generation will be the last to experience freeskiing at its best.
i go out to many resorts, and i see lots of people who depend on the snow to make a living. not all resorts are run by huge corporations. and the lack of snow this year, is crippling. as most canadians now now. blue mountain has shut its doors as it is not makin nds meet and will wait now for temperatures to be more favorable before re opening.
but as a snowmaker myself. i know that it'll take weeks to recoup and gather back on everyone's feet. sure lets hope that in a week. the temperature drops and we can puke out the snow, we'll eat up water sources faster than mother nature can refil them and once again there will be a pause in production as it all refills.
And this isnt the only area of concern. the world is starting to feel the wrath of human ignorance and selfishness. europe,N.A. are having record highs in temperatures. and bc might be enjoying themselves now. but we all remember the shittiest season on record 2 years ago.
this problem is really starting to present itself people. i suppose im asking you all as skiers to really think and be aware of yourself and your actions. littering. electricity usage etc.. everything factors in. and if youlove the sport as much as i do. you'd be worried, this could just possibly be the warmest 10 years on record for no other reason than it being time to ahve some warmer winters before we enjoy the cold ones again. OR.. it might just not,, we might never enjoy a white christmas with certantity ever again.
think..

the earth goes in cycles do you really think the ice age was caused by people? no
so why would this be too
ya we should stop polluting and stuff but i dont think we could completely stop global warming

can you prove to me its not global warming..
exactly you cant..
but i agree with the other thread there are lots of reasons as to why this year in this area things are warmer due to such reasons as el nino, the western storm frontsthat have been preventing the arctic air to come south. there is no doubt in my mind that those are some causes to our lack of snow in the east.
but you cannot tell me that this 10 year trend is "definately normal" nobody can.
thats why i was asking everyone to become aware of what the earth is telling us..
i so remember a time when i didnt even have to worry about the fact that there might not be snow for christmas or sking in late november.
but dont be so ignorant as to just quickly pass this all off as a quick fix solution that this is all just caused by these fronts and el nino etc etc...
what do you think caused el nino to shift paths in the first place,
something is giving the earth the ok to cause this freakish weather.

you guys are so taking the easy way out of all this.
of course the earh has cycles, and yes hence why the dinosaurs died and evolution happened.
and no we cant prevent global wamring because al of our daily lives are geared around ourselves and our pleasures. the cavemen didnt live with what we do, we "adapted " selfishly and everything else in the world has succomb to us.
so no now we cant do anything to prevent the further warming of our world. but i sure as hell can do seomthing to try and reduce the effect.
but everyone who has replied so far seems really concered about the future. which scares me..
you almost sound like you're from the city.

pretty much from what i have seen in VT is that there is no pattern going on whatsoever, the last 2 years have sucked, 3 years ago was GREAT and 2 years ago was awesome...its all been pretty much natural weather patterns. El nino kills winter...it happens, you cant expect to have a good winter every year. i know this year is ridiculous but i'm just keeping my hopes up that eventually we will get some snow, there is not a lot more that you can do. If it was global warming do you really think it would make that much of a drastic change in 2 years? i doubt it.

yeah theres some statistic that i cant remember the exact number but
the amount of pollutants a volcano emisses when it erupts is like 10 times the amount of pollutants humans have put out since like the 50's until now
mmy point is... although i believe in global warming 100%... you have to think about how no one knows for sure how nature will actually run its course.

if you knew anything about global warming... youd know its nearly impossible for the temperature change to be this drastic in this short of a time. global warming attributes to it but its not the explanation fo rit.

Changes in these are caused by global warming. Look back 800000 years and look at the cycles of change in temperature and CO2. You will see that the temperature is higher than it's ever been before. The disturbing thing is that the CO2 it twice as high as ever before. This severe increase is attributed to the Industrial Revolution that occurred 150 years ago. Humans haven't been able to affect the environment of the last 800,000 years, but they have affected the last 150, which makes the sudden increases more alarming and the possibilities of what could happen more frightening. it is predicted that global temperature increase could be 6 degrees. This isn't distributed evenly accros the earth. Areas near the equator will see about a 1 degree change, but the poles will most likely see an increase of 12 degrees. There should be no excuse why conserving resources couldn't help the situation. If everyone does there part and finds a few ways to eliminate waste (which by the way will make things cheaper for you) than we could all end up better off.

this doesnt disprove global warming exists but it proves this shitty season isnt cause of global warming:
EL NINO-jetstream farther north than usual cause of el nino which keeps the cold air farther north

doubt it. al gore is a dumbass. he made the movie to make money. do really think the earth will be destroyed in 10 years like the movie said? probably not. like all movies it was made to make money and destroying the earth makes a good story.

it was 64 today at okemo. every trail was barely skiable. its gonna have to close soon if these temps dont correct themselves.
and for all you fucks who think global warming doesnt exist go jump off a cliff. its happening and all your doing is denying it and making it worse.
(and i do realize the cause of this warm winter is the el nino)

No I cant, but i'm sure tons of people would and could, and i hope they do, cuz its so fucking annoying hearing about global warming, its proven the earth has been warmer, way before industry was even a factor, so have some dam patience, and quit blaming everything that doesnt go your way so that you can go out and ski on everyone else, last time i checked you lived on this planet too, what are you supposedly doing to make a difference?

i have no idea how to do those fancy quotes, by to answer the last post,,
what im doing. is trying to make everyone aware that a change needs to be made, im also not littering anymore, i try and carpool when i can. I also recycle, I grow a vegetable garden in the summer. I am also trying to build a homemade windmill to produce the power for my house and barns.
everyone can do something to try and help the earth.
and maybe not littering has nothin to do with the global wARMing. but it sure as hell draws the line between people who dont give a shit about anything but themselves.
and dont think dont know what im talking about. i am one of the many who rely on winter to make a living. so dont tell me to sit back and be patient, while you are enjoying your milk and cookies all warm in your oakley puffy, in your parents hard earned house.
life gets real, really fast when you grow up.
im glad there are some people who understand the point i was trying to make. a solution can be found if the masses come together.

if its part of global warming youd hafta have proof of the last like 100-200 yrs of snow fall/ winters and then do ur calculations. 10 yrs isnt enough to draw conclusions.

nomensteven, stop talking about how the east coast ski areas are open even if they do not have natural snow, and how its not global warming- are u a meteorologist or something?
we dont have snow because its too warm to make snow

how can you call something that has been happening for 10 years on earth a trend? especially when we have had some good winters on the east in the past 10 years? 10 years on the global spectrum is almost nothing. a millisecond. the earth has been around for billions of years and does loads of things that scientists have yet to explain or may not even know about yet. the earth and as a whole is also extremely resourceful and can regulate itself far better than most or perhaps anyone realizes.

lets cover some basics here, warmer air over large bodies of water leads to precipitation, the warmer the air the more precip. high elevations experience generally lower temperatures. precip at low temperatures is called snow.

Global warming is happening, but it isnt totaly the cause of this warm winter...i cant tell you what is, but it doesnt affect the world that fast...BUT IT DOES EXIST. you cant tell me that what comes out of your car, and the millions of other cars running this very second isnt affecting the environment in some way.
I think in general we need to educate our selves on the problem, and do what we can to stop/fix/slow it down.
take the bus, recycle, turn off unused lights, STOP DRIVING TO YOUR FRIENDS HOUSE 1 STREET AWAY.

just so you people know this is the 4th climate change scare in the last 100 years. first it was global cooling, then warming again then cooling again in the 70's and every time it was hyped up just like this one. all you global warming activists are going to look back in ten years and say, "Damn, I was a fag". And if you havent down many many many hours of research looking at websites from both sides of the arguement then you need to shut up.

You know whether you believe in global warming or not, the biggest thing we all need to do is STOP USING GASOLINE.
Now this is hard as hell as a skier... I rely on my car to get to the hill, thereby doing bad things to the planet.
I wish I could get an electric car... I think I want to do the biodiesel thing for my next car.
Try to figure out how you can cease using gas and we're one step closer warm winters or not.

lol your such a doushbag.. global warming doesnt like jump the temperatures up 10 degrees in the course of one year haha your fucking retarded for thinking that.. it has something to do with a pressure system or something i dunno im not really sure what its called but ive heard of it. haha and you might wanna remember when your talking about humans being selfish becaseu we dont live like the cavemans did.. your typing on a keyboard right? oh wait thats connected to a computer.. oh shit. but that takes electricity.. oh and the internet.. and oh shit you probably have lights in your house too. just shut up

We are having a bad season here in Norway as well.
But the winter of 2001 it was a really, really bad season as well. With a total snowfall of 80(!) centimeters, vs. a normal lying at about 2-4 metres. Last year we had a rather normal season with a total of 2,2 metres. My theory is that it's not global warming, but the El-Nino thing.

it is really hard to be professional when all i really want to do is slap every single one of you little shits.
none of you got my point. and started fighting over whether global warming is real or not.
i was asking you all to become aware of your actions and its concequences on this earth.
and to al who say el nino is caused by global warmin. it is not.. "global warming" or so they say has caused the el nino jet stream to shift north of its regular path for the last several hundred years, and this is why we are having problems with the arctic air comming south at the moment.
and TRUST ME. like i've already mentioned i know what im talking about for this winter of course we will EVENTUALLY get some snow.. this is canada.. its not like we just wont have one.. but my point is that this late start to the season has a huge effect on the whole industry. think about it. no snow... ski hill barely gets enough skiable hours before march ends to pay its day to day bills, but not enough to pay for its expenses in add ons for the year, so that company now isnt getting paid, which means down the line someone's mother father sister brother WHOEVER is losing there job, it may be temporary. but after enough years of no snow in december those people who ahve relied on their summer jobs tiding them over until the snow flies. will be short cash. just like everyone who depends on the ski hills right now are..
and if you all are too selfish to understand that every little bit helps. then we really are srewed and in the end if it doesnt turn out to be global warming we'll all die of some plague that whipes the earth due to unsanitary conditions, and doug made a great point about gasoline. at least someone understand what i was saying..

Uhm.... so like, why is it flipping awesome here in the NW and we already have more snowfall then we normally get in a season???
We had a really bad season two years ago when other areas had an amazing season.
I think you need to step back and look at the big picture. Read some stats, look at some charts. And please know how to read a chart first, know what it's based on. Because it is EXTREMELY easy to make one look like something that it's not. Many political charts and polls have this problem.
I don't exactly refute global warming. And I do agree that we need to take care of this planet. According to many experts, some parts of the world are due for a warm cycle. However, the cycles are not always consistent in all areas.
However, I think you should not be worried about being able to ski... if disorderly warming stopped snowfall, the chances of you surviving as a human are very slim.
Again, many people will make dishonest and even statistically invalid charts to make their point of view work. It takes deep study and research to find the truth, now more then ever.
Thanks, James
