Photographers, advice please.

I'm kind of a noob. I've shot skiing before, had a lot of pics come out great, but I'm still a noob. It looks like I'll be taking a lot of pics in the coming two weeks, seeing as I cant ski, but I can hike, however, most of this will be at night. I've got the lights in the park on poles to work with, but nothing great. What do I need to know? I'm shooting on a D50. I'd like to save the learning the hard way part, any advice I could get on settings, working with artificial lights, etc would be great. Thanks.

make sure the majority of light is behind you, never frame your subject with light from behind, use a lens with like f1.8-2.4 and shoot lots of pics.

unless you want a silhouette. If you don't have a flash, I would recommend getting one, unless you don't want that kind of photo, then just use some fast glass and high iso. And shoot a lot, and look to see if they are coming out alright

yeah, get a flash, although i haven't gotten the chance to take skiing pictures yet this year (damn east coast), some of my favorite pics on here were made using flash in the right place

50/1.8 or 35/f2. Get a flash too though.

get a flash for sure!!!!

i have a sunpak555 for skateboardin night shots and it helps so damn much....just watch the flash placement,apprature, etc.

Def. flash.

Stay away from using a large zoom (ie. anything over 70mm)

Depending on what you're going for, wide angles work well with low light

I'm kind of in the same situation. I just got a d50 but I've been taking pictures my whole life. I need a flash and wide angle maybe 11 or 12mm not really sure which one but if anyone knows where to get one wanna point me in that direction?

Sigma 10-20. I love mine (photos below). Or a 10.5 fisheye is your other option but I don't think that's as versatile. For flash get an SB-800 for flash if you can afford it.

If you are cheap you can get a flash and a optical slave trigger. This is a remote flash that is triggered by your on camera flash. I use one for mountain bike photography and it works alright for the price
