In recent weeks, the thread titled Burton Skis has spurred much controversy over a rumor that the snowboard company burton, which has spent money actively bashing on newschool skiing, might be getting into skiing next season with a line of its own planks. What I am wondering is does anyone have concrete proof of this? I would hate to find out that this rumor is true, because of the horrendis effect it could have on smaller companies like Line, 4FRNT, and Surface.
i honestly do think so. Look at all the starting out kids in snowboarding, they all idolize burton and get decked out in it. I see no reason why kids in skiing would all start getting thier pair of burtons instead of some line invaders or whatever. So yes i do believe that it would take lots of money. Sure you can say what about all us, but quite frankly i think wed all still support other companies, but its really all those new kids that count, were mostly all sold to a company ( i know but in a way) this kids would all through there money there,
i honestly would. i work in a shop and compared to every other company im not gonna lie, burtons products are the best. If they do come out with skis, there products will be right up there as some of the best made skis. They have endless amounts of money and they would not put out skis without a huge chunk of money spent or R&D.
NOPE, burton may have buttloads of money but they definatly dont make nice snowboards, two kids I dug with in Hood snapped every '07 model burton in less than a week(between the both of them) hitting no rails and nothing over 60' they are garbage and thats real.Thats neato you work in shop and all but dont claim it like you would know your shit becuase of it.Do you snowboard? Have you riddin on everything in your shop? I doubt it, sounds to me like your burton rep just happened to be the most convincing.
i dont think it should be a big deal at all....cause if you think about it theres , rossignal, salomon and k2 ... like the all sell both snowboards and skis, its basically the same right?
I have ridden Burton boards for 18 years except for one year where I tried another company. For a few years I broke more than one board a year. It happens, and Burton replaced every one. That's why I still am with them. They also have the best shapes and materials (that I have ridden, but I have not been on every board made). If they bring that to skis, I would be very interested in sking them.
I broke my STLs last year after about 8 days on snow in early January. I just got my new replacements on the 14th of December.
And to the guy that said all Burton boards but the Shaun White sucked, you are the reason they might be thinking about making skis. Take a few minutes and think about that.
Well libtech just converted to skiing by making NAS (narrow ass snowboards) which i believe is an insult to skiing. If you are going to make skis dont insult us at the same time. But the magnetraction tech seems really cool at the same time. Either way I havent seen a single kid with a pair yet soo im not to sure on theyre success but its only been one year.
ya a shit ton of rich little kids will buy them, becasue now newschool skiing is cool becasue burton is making skis. buton is far more commercial than line, armada, 4frnt, high society, liberty, and a shit ton more.
sadly yes i believe they will. look at your independent companies right now lined up against every other "big mean corporate" company on your shop's wall and do a little price comparisson. burton will more than likely come out with a well made relatively inexpensive bombproof ski (like most of their boards) and the kids will buy them. don't say they wont because the definately will with the amount of snowboarders coming back to skiing either A) full-time or B) doing both ski and board, burton will do well. they have a reputable name behind them and massive financial backing. in ontario alone, burton owns approximately 40-45% of the snowboard market and approximately 30% of the canadian market.
skiers being sponsored by RED and Anon were just the begining. i've talked to some reps and they wouldn't give me a straight "yes" or "no" answer so basically i'm going to take that as a "yes". might not be for next season but i can definately see them coming out the season after next. rushing it will only lead to shoddy product!
if burton makes skis, they will also make a new, different type of binding that are the only binding that can be used with their ski, and they will make a special boot, or line of boots, that will be the only boot to fit in their binding
no....quiksilver owns dynastar which owns roxy. and they are roxy skis (they also have snowboards) but they are no way affiliated with burton. i have all those skis in my shop
it would be the upset of the fricken year. burtons got enough money and they should just stick 2 snowboarding. thing is theyll make the worst skis ever and make so much money on them. new skiers would want burton over armada because theyve never heard of armada. screw burton, they suck.
are you guys missing all the positives?
more money to go into skiing comps (look at all of burtons sponsored comps.)
more pro/am skiers
more money into the industry.
sure. its bullshit the whole "no skier" signs and stuff. but thats marketing. they were a snowboard company. so if they throw it around out there that skiing sucks, then brainwash kids that snowboarding sucks, kids wont buy skis, and will buy snowboards.
Er let me send an e-mail out to the shop I used to work at. jake Burton was like best friends with the owner and I think this rumor could be ended pretty quick.
They are slow to respond so if I dont post again today don't flip.
thx dude and hurry up. the only good thing 2 cum out of this is more money 4 comps and snowboarders becoming skiers and snowboards can finally fricken shut up that skiing is 4 girls or only snowboarding is cool. most burton riders say crap like skiing is 4 losers but if their favorite company makes skis i can give them so much crap itll be WICKED fun
if burton makes skis they will look like the biggest hypocrites ever bashin skiers for years and sinking money into bashing our sport..now this same group of people is going to start investing into our sport and sinking mad money in R&D and what not it just doesn't make sense to me. I know that I will not support this company because all they want to do is cash in right now because our sport is the one thats blowing up and its not all about snowboarding anymore and their sales have probably levelled off in recent years. Therefore you will see me supporting companies that have stayed true to freeskiing
burton makes good snowboards (thats why everybody buys them). If they made skis theyd prob make park specific skis and I'm sure theyd be good. every company burton owns has done well and they just bought a surf board company so it looks like their trying to expand. every time they do enter a new market, like goggles or helmets, they make a good product and rapidly gain market share.
