Anyone who knows how to mount skis? or some help about how to figure out true center

umm.... I work for a shop and when something needs to be mounted true center you place the appropriate template on the skie, but hte boot on it, adjust to the boot, then align up the nice lil' arrow on the template w/ the nicer lil' line on the skis... did I miss anything.... hm... no I think thats it.. that's why I don't get paid alot.... as far as doing it w/o a template, not a clue...

be careful where you remount them, make sure the new holes and the old holes arnt too close together, or the durability of the ski will be comprimised. Ive broken skis this way.

i think i figured it out but i also forgot to ask... how far down do you typically drill, and what size hole

shops use a specific bit to drill. it alows them to go down only so far. if your mounting them  your self, goodluck with out a jig(the object that allows them to get your binding on straight and in the right place). measure how far your screw will go down in and drill just a little less than that i guess. its kinda hard doin it with out the propper tools. poor wood glue in the holes  to help dry rotting and stregthen your mount. as far as mounting true center, my shop just takes a tape measure dnd does it that way. unless the skis sais true center

without a jig its going to be pretty tough. on top of that you really want plugs for the holes from where the old mount was to help add a little strength. i work at a shop myself and i wouldnt be able to mount bindings freehand but if you want to this is what i got. break out a measuring tape and find the exact center of the ski and mark there with a sharpie or something. now measure the exact center of the boot sole and i guess mark that too somehow(on the side?). set the bindings on the ski without the screws in them and place the boot into the bindings so that the mark on the boot and the mark on the ski match up. i guess use a thin marker or something to mark the holes for where the screws should be, take the boot and bindings off and drill away. wrap the drill bit thickly in masking tape about 1/4" up the drill bit(that is a ball park number i pulled out of my ass so hopefully someone can give you an accurate number). basically the thick masking tape youve wrapped around the bit will stop you from drilling more than 1/4" into the ski. fill the holes with a squirt of wood glue and screw in the bindings.

WAIVER: i am in no way responsible for you fucking up your skis or you getting hurt from this. i have never mounted freehand but if i had to that would be my assumption of how to do it. other people please feel free to add to this or rip it apart.

true center you have to measure tip to tail, divide by 2, and then place a new line xxcm back from the tip...


example.

a 179 k2 measures to 182cm long. 182 divided by 2 = 91cm

measure 91 cm back from the tip, draw a new line there with a t-square, and then mount binding with jig.

yeah yeah... a few hours after I posted that it him me that line is recommended... 98% of the ppl that come into Sports Authority just have their stuff tossed on at that line... I don't even bother confusing ppl w/ other choices at that point in the game... my bad

You are truly a moron, this is why so many skis get mis mounted, they let idiots like you put holes in brand new skis, maybe measure the ski/2=true center. The line is usually an inch or two back

You should ask people what they like to ski and where they want them mounted. You sound like a really shitty tech

Well i mounted my prophets yesterday, and mounted a bunch of skis before. What i do to find centre is i take a string a run it from tip to tail. Make sure its perfectly flat on the ski. Cut the rope and then measure it. Find the centre of that, and then mark it. Put the string back on the ski, and you will have centre.

Use your old holes as a guide bro, find a drill bit that fits in em, and tape of the part that's not in the hole.
I've freehanded a lot of skis, it's not hard, just gotta take your time.
Measuring that second toepiece to be EXACTLY where the first one you mounted is should take you a half an hour of double triple measuring. That parts key.
If you want some more tips, let me know, I've made every mistake you can just about and learned from them

the exact depth for an adult ski is 9mm. Width of the hole is typically 3.5mm

ouch man... alrigth I don't wanna get into it w/ you.. but for recreational skiers who are trying it out for the first time and are buying 120 dollar rossy axiums my personal opinion is that mounting at reccomended is a fair situation until they get a hang of it and decide more specifically what they are looking for. My bad for the mispost (I already noted above that I mispoke). I think our rub comes in the fact that I normally deal w/ ppl who are either giving skis as a gift for somebody who has never skied, or is trying it out themselves. I'd love to work for a shop that sold alot of higher end stuff, but I don't.. anyhow, sorry again for the mispost..

^ same here if people dont tell us that they want the skis mounted at a certain location then we just mount them at recommended. really many people outside of the freeski world have no clue about moving the mounts foreward or backward and it would most likely confuse the hell out of them trying to explain. i had some guy bring in brand new scratch bc wrs's with scratch 140 ti bindings and i asked where he would like us to mount the skis and he replied "what?" needless to say they were mounted at the standard line, i wanted to cry.

dont do it yourself, it wont turn out good. cuz if u have to ask online, u shouldnt be doing it...

Trying to mount bindings yourself is the stupidest thing you can do. One lil mistake and you completly ruin a pair of 400 dollar skis.....

i don;t think im going to do it but i really want to learn how thats all. when i get new skis i will mess around with some old ones.

If you have a cool shop see if they will let you go back there with them and see how it's done
