Camera and Filming thread

In light of Nick and I getting off topic in megans thread I thought I would start a new thread to keep things together.

Nick, BenBirk and now Nipples have professional quality cameras, not sure who else so please chime in.  I am going to need pointers and help to get up to speed with you guys.  I think we have a great opportunity to create some really sick stuff with multiple cameras going.  For example. I really liked the shot of nips jump starting downslope and finishing the jump with the upslope shot.

got a canon 20d im going 2 be on lock down sat taking pics ( if the weather lets us go) and im getting a pan dvx 30 therw my job on jec 1st. tyler dulben is going 2 be there sat also with his 3 chip camera so we got him on lock down 2.

Haha it doesn't have that many buttons compared to a dvx300.

I loaded adobe photshop and premiere on this laptop tonight.  I am interested in taking stills and freakin nips left the f'n mnual in his bookbag.  I could strangle him.  Well hope to see you all out ther tomorrow!!!!!!!!!

Why? did you did you figure out that you film better than you ski ? I would rather get you a decent set of skis and some real skills!  Just bustin on ya!  You coming to Boulder any time soon?

Can anyone tell me the cable I need to transfer the film to this lap top.  I seem remember USB 2.0 but I don't think this lap top has that. 

nips left the manual at home.

i dont think your laptop dosnt have usb 2.... and if u cant find the manual just try matchin up the cable & the hole.

You need a Firewire cable. the cameras inser is 4pin...and your computer can either be 4 or 6.My computer has a 6 pin..but im not sure how the size would be on a laptop.

papa i wouldnt edit on a laptop unless its an incredibaly good one. i would stick to a desktop. thats awesome that u got those cameras, the sonys have a good white balance feature so learn to use it well. we have those at school and there like my 2nd fav cam in that price range. Good luck with the edits.

I am anxious just to learn the basics,  it will quite some time before I create an edit LOL!!!

It appears that this is bullshit!!  I am looking at the connections,  I am starting to think that I can't even EASILY download and grab a clip to email it to someone?  WTF 

Seriously, I have 4 different cables from other cameras still and video with me and NONE of them work.  The VX doesn't come with cables for downloading?  WTF $2400..  and no lousy compatible $10 cable .................  BULLSHIT - all these fancy controls and nothing user friendly.  I am pissed..  obviously  LOL

No mini dv cameras come with cables.You always need to buy a firewire cable for them.

so I gave up skiing today to waste my time at 6 stores, yes that is right 6 fuckin stores and nothing to make the connection.   SONY is going to send me the shit I need...   what a crock.

... with a little bit of internet searching skill, you can find any type of firewire card and cables you'll need for the camera. I can help you if you still need help. Hit me up.

it's cool I can do that, LOL.  I just am surprised that I couldn't get what I needed by shopping for it.  We are up in the poconos for our PA ski week and I was thinking I would have some time to fool around with all of this stuff.  I am stuck for now.  No giant deal, just frustrating.

Most PC's have a 4 pin firewire input, where just about every Mac I've seen uses 6 pin. I use a 4pin to 4pin cable to transfer video, and I've seen Firewire to USB cable on sale now. Depends on the store you go to, but thats amazing that you went to six and no one could help you.

you should be able to use a usb2.0 cable, since its faster than firewire now anyway.i'm not super familiar with the vx, but most cams allow you to use either firewire 400/800 or usb1.0/2.0.

.. Are you sure that cams will allow you to transfer VIDEO using USB 2.0? I thought the USB was just for use the "photos" that you take with the cameras...

Some cameras will transfer through usb,but it uploads really slow compared to firewires. I never tried using a usb to upload on my VX...i don't plan on it either.

i have a ghetto digital8 that i can use usb1.0 to upload video. yeah, its super slow, but it worked til i got a firewire card in my old comp. usb2.0 is actually faster than some firewire connections, so there's no reason it shouldnt work, provided the camera has a usb2.0 port on it. like i said, i'm not super familiar with the vx.

I looked for every type of cable that would make the connection between the camera and any computer that I have.  THe connection on the VX is shaped similar to the letter "M" - that connection only went to a 4 or 6 pin, hence firewire.  BTW the old canon we have is the same way.  Hopefully I will have some time to look into cables and what have since I am back in the city again.  LOL

yeah papa ur running into the problem that the vx is a pro camera and ur looking for consumer cam features. u will figure it all out soon enough though and u will be happy, but until then its gonna be a bitch. good luck and if u have any questions shoot me a pm

also white balance that cam before every day adn whenever teh light changes. it makes teh shot so good and its so easy

Papa, My Vx manual is down in my box in my basement and im just to lazy to go get it.lol but for white balance.

I know that their is 3 differnt types of white balance on the vx.
1)i think is just regular
2)i think is outdoor
3)is indoor

I usually just keep it on the normal one.

To white balance point it on something white and push the scroll button in. The white balance icon will start to flash. When it stops the white balance is done. then you can set your shutter speed and exposure.

the "M" connection you are talking about is most likely a 4-pin firewire connection.

Ya its 4 pin. but you also need to know the pin size of the fire wire card on the computer so that you can buy the right size.

Right. Well, if it is also an "M" then you know its a 4 pin as well. If it looks more like a USB type thingy, its a 6pin.

WTF steve!!!!!!!

They give media passes.  I am betting that you had an attitude and they shut you down.

They have a problem with poachers since it is so easy to hike there and kick people out on a daily basis. I warned evan about that.  Too late now, but you told me that you were taking it easy and that you wouldn't be skiing any time soon, I could have called ahead for you.  Keep in mind guys that you have to have a pass to be on thier slopes for insurance reasons. They won't let you on the slopes with out a pass. That is not too hard to understand is it?

The GM is a very chill guy and if you talk to him FIRST he will give you the world! Burn the bridge with BB if you want to just cause you think you are above the rules. but whatever man, I know you.

Look Papa, maybe i should have explained the whole story.

Now, you jumped to conclusions when you assumed that i would be skiing. I had no intent on skiing at all. I didnt even bring my skis. They refused to give me a media pass. I had no idea i had to call ahead.

You also assumed that i had a bad attitude towards them. This isnt true at all. I was the nicest, most obliging person i could have been....even when they were fucking throwing me out.

They told me:
1: I couldnt hike the mountain, or ski patrol would throw me out.
2. I need a pass to ride the lift
3. I couldnt get on the lift without skis

To shorten things up, I asked them if i could rent skis, AND have a lift ticket, but only pay for one of the two. Some JACKASS employee flipped on me saying that i was trying to "Scam" Big Boulder for a free ticket.

He went and told the GM behind closed doors...not allowing me to say my side of the story. Of course, the guy who told the GM fed him some exaggerated, bullshit story.

The GM comes down screaming telling me to get off the mountain. He wouldnt let me explain anything.

I'll continue to shorten things up. Eventually i tried to come to the base of the mountain and sit on a bench. The asshole GM didnt want me sitting there. He called the cops.



All in all...Huff, the GM and Big Boulder are a bunch of fucking immature adults who need to grow up. I had no intent of "scamming" anyone. I even offered to pay for both rentals, and the ticket.

I know your cool with those guys Papa, and i have no problems. I wish they could have acted a little more civilized and addressed the problem (if there even WAS a problem) more maturely.

Damn...  I wondered why the GM was hanging around me for 15 minutes, it seemed like he had something to say but never came out with it. 

WOW, not that it is worth anything now, I am extending my apologies for all the people who were trying to scam them over the last few weeks, they pulled 30 of them off one night alone. I can imagine that they have had heard every story imaginable.
