So at the end of last year i picked up a pair of K2 fujatives (end of year sale). I wanted to get into park skiing since the downhill can get pretty boring out here in Ohio. Its only been ski season here for about 2 weeks but im getting a lot better. I've already got 180's, some grabs, and flat and kinked rails down. I was out yesterday and spent the whole time working on grinding cause it was to warm and slow to get much air on the ramps. Today i took a look at my skis and noticed that the edges look really worn down and a few parts even look rusty. My first instinct was to sharpen them but wont this make rails a lot harder? Also whats up with the rust on practically brand new skis?
so should i use the sharpener to take off the rust? luckily there isnt any on near the bindings where i grind. I didnt think the edges would rust since ive only used these skis 4 times
Edges will rust no matter how many times you use your skis. After you get home from skiing, leave your skis base up and let them dry up before putting them away. Best place is to keep them inside so the water can evaporate.
And like it has been mentioned before, use a gummy stone to remove any bits of rust.
im pretty old and i too notice that ski edges these days rust way too quick/easy. my silencers literally had rust after a week. that guys is right- carry a rag in your bag/car and wipe them down after your day is done. i keep my skis inside now too. back in the day id just throw them in the garage and not think twice and they would never rust. today companies are using cheaper metals/alloys to save a buck. sign of the times.
as far as your grindation problems you might have to accept the fact that if youre gonna go all core on the rails you are going to have to have a pair of ppark skis and then a pair of downhill/allmtns especially for us in the midwest where we dont ski on snow but the lovely packed granular aka ICE. happy xmas.
I couldnt agree more. catching an edge on a rail is one thing but in the midwest on the granular snow, going up for a big jump and cactching an adge where a snowboard fucker cut on the jump really really sucks
yeah im midwest too. cinci. thanks for the input im not so worried bout the dullness cause i got a pair of omnis for downhill, it was mostly just the rust that was buggin me
there is no problem with rust at all, its just casue there was water on ur edges for a while, next time u go out literaly first 5 feet of slideing on snow the rust is gone , its just a oxygenization(sp?)
Actually, rust left on ski edges can and will eventually weaken the metal. Surface rust does come off on the first run, but if you wanna give your skis some TLC, let em dry up after every snow day and rub out the rust with a gummy stone.
of course im just saying if u dont take care of ur skis, which i dont understand y u wouldnt, i wax every time after i ski,but thats beside the point, yea, its good to take care of ur skis and get the rust off
