The song that is the origin of the term, being called straight edge. It was a response to the retarded use of heroin in the DC punk and hardcore scene (yes straightedge was a punk rock thing).
It wasn't really about (and to most true kids, they have friends from all walks of life, don;t judge their friends for doing drugs), not doing drugs, but making personal choice free from peer pressure.
Growing up we all are pressured to smoke weed, try drugs, have promiscuous sex, smoke cigarettes, and that is really unfair.
Do i regret that I got introduced to those things, hell yes I do. To this day I am a drinker, a stoner, and a smoker. It fucking sucks so much. Gladly i was never a fan of promiscuous sex (i think kissing and sex SHOULD and ARE something SPECIAL). But drinking fucking sucks, it fucks your life in the ass, and kills you slowly and painfully. Weed I don't have much against, but where I live it really is a gateway to trying other drugs (not in medical terms, in social circles as peer pressure). And cigarettes just fucking suck.
It was supposed to, and still is about personal choice. And respect for peopel to have that right.
I'm a smoker, he's straightedge, we're all skiiers, I'm Canadian, you're Russian. We label and stereotype ourselves everyday, anyone here who is formally taught psychology will know this as well.
To be honest, I wish I had the courage to live my life without crutches, but sadly I don't, I hope I can one day clean up my act.
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MY sXe FRIEND
If you aren't into your local straight edge scene, dont refer to yourself as straight edge. As black people say "THAT'S OUR WORD, DON'T USE IT"
