Well, they're pretty different programs. What are you going to be doing the most work in? Photo editing? Computer illustrations or text work?
If you're a photographer and or into photo editing get PS.
Illustrator is vector based, so it's great for doing logos and text, but dosen't do any photo editing.
You need to decide between doing illustrations or working with photos/image files.

id wait to get photoshop cause CS3 will be out early next year. and like ^ he said.. depends really what you like to do. If you do layouts, illustrator may be something to consider. you can place images in it and build pages and website around it as well.

illustrator is a vector based program used more for creating graphics and logos while illustrator is a bitmap based program used for editing/manipulating photos

yea, serously, dont waste your money. only buy them if you will make money off them. thats my philosophy.
in any case, you said upgrade photoshop, which would impily that you already have photoshop. which version? I would get illustrator before I upgraded photoshop in most cases. Like most people already said, illustrator is a vector based program. Its kind of senseless that they said this, since its obvious you dont know what that is...It means that its not meant for editing photos essencially. you make shapes with is, sometimes they can be very intercit. then you add fills (color) and you can make them a certian style, design or gradient. it can do a lot more then that, but the point is, its not for editing photos, its for creating graphics/text/logos/whatever. its for creating, not editing/modifying.

yeah man like people have stated...they are 2 completly different applications.
it really depends on what you want to do...
and if i were you i would download them, you could always download the trials, find a serial number some where and convert it to the full version...

why get illustrator? Photoshop does more, and you can still do vector drawing in photoshop.
Get Flash if you're interested in vector stuff cause then you can animate it/ make games with it.

if you have photoshop 7, i say get illustrator. its a really cool program. much better for what it is meant to do then trying to do that shit in photoshop! 7 is not that different then CS2, mostly the layout, with a few fetures too, but if your used to 7 then your fine. I wouldnt spend the extra money on CS2.
