is washing your coat bad for the water proofing?

yes, get it dry cleaned, they can do special waterproofing treatments

When you wash your outerwear the first few times, it kind of reactivates the waterproof coating. Use pure soap powder or none at all - definitely no fabric softeners. After maybe 5 to 7 washes it's pretty much gone though and you need to re-proof, but that stuff doesn't last too long.
