So last night I was trying to dream up a project to work on over the winter in my spare time. I was thinking something motorized like a go cart, mini bike etc except Ive already made a gocart. I have an extra lawn mower engine in my garage, with a vertical shaft so I thought of the ratical idea of making a tow rope in my garage. I should be able to get almost all the parts free because my unlce owns a construction company which he said he could supply me with metal. So lets hear some opinions? Ideas? Thanks
well it depends on the motor and like he said the gear ratios you use but it could work. it would be cool just to figure it out anyway so i say go for it!
I asked my shop teacher (tech school) and he's whicked smart about like everything, and he told be that its possible all dependent on the gearing, he said I could do it with a 1 horse power motor. he also told me how to anker it in the ground so I could remove it and put it in my garage for the summer. Im pretty sure Im going to be starting it this weekend, but It could be a long project but It doesnt matter because the forcast plans for 50's-60's till like the end of december.
^to the guy with the 5hp engine - more adding on to it actually. I unfortunately think that the chance of you getting it to work is minimal. I have a really powerful lawn mower, and it only pumps out around 1.7 hp. The problem with them is that they aren't designed for a) torque, or b) horse power. All they need to do is have a high rpm simply because the resistance of the grass blades is minimal to the extreme. The best you could get out of it (with an insanely geared gear-box) would be a really slow and creeping rope tow. If that's what you want it might work, but unfortunately I don't think it will.
If you make it work though I will be really happy cuz then I'll know to do it too.
I dont think kids would destroy it since it would be right in my front yard. but I think I could do it though because I go to a technical school so I have all the resources I need such as machining, auto mechanics, welding, and so on. I think I may put off the project till next year though because the east has no snow.
