Rails, whats the hype about?

I think rails suck, dont get me wrong they're fun and all, but they suck. Woop dee doo, lets see who can spin around the most. Switch up after switch up gets annoying. Rails are getting to be maxed out. Everyone and their mother can 270, 450, pretzel ect, aslong as you put in a good few days into it. Sure rails could get longer/more gnar ect but theres nothing much innovative being done these days. I see potential in nose/tail press but after that where can it go? Its just more spinning and hopping. Vanular and the flatspins are dope sure, but thats a rare case. Urban is a different story tho. Urban is gnar and has crazy potential but honestly, the summer setups with a 1/2 foot patch of slush for a landing and people decked out in full ski gear is lame.
Why is it that rails are such a big part of skiing today? Ive seen hundreds of videos posted here where kids who can 270 pretzel, 450, switch this and that on any rail yet have troubble landing a 540 and look like shit doing it. Why is it that people put so much more effort into getting good at rails than actually learning how to jump/ski properly?
Oh and stop posting videos of your back yard 270s off. They suck and nobody wants to see it.

rails are cool cuz they are more technical than jumps. and all rails are different unlike many jumps which have lips and landings.

wow, if you arent impressed by heeds skiing youre a fuckin moron. its not neccesarily his tricks that are impressive, even though he throws craze, its the style that he originated. how many kids have you seen try to ski like him? how many have been even close to successful in copin his steeze? NONE. if you arent impressed by that than i dont know man. the only other persons style people have been fuckin dickriders of harder is prolly tanners and his whole fuckin gorilla deal. if i may ask what does impress you? sw 14s? a lot of people will be doin those this year. landin switch in pow? every pro has sketchy ass switch landings in pow.

I believe that rails in a park have a way less significance than urban. However, i believe urban is becoming some what 'stock' as well.

hahah sooo fucking true.....i was thinking the same thing today. the park is honestly like a highschool cafeteria......most everyone is just trying to look cool. people figure that they can look cool with less effort if they concentrate on rails and can spin 1440 degrees total across a 15 foot flat bar. jumps are so much more fun even if you don't do shit off them.

rails are pretty fun but im not the greatest on them. i just enjoy skiing and just hitting random shit doing dumb stuff like 180s, spread eagles, 3s ya know. i just think theres more to skiing than rails or park for that matter. theres alot of people who think that the only way ur a good skiier is if your good at rails yet they can barely ski themselves, which is why i hate skiing at alot of places here in the midwest because everyones a park rat and its jsut awkward when everyone is doin 450s on and you just slide it barely. there are many different ways you can be good at skiing, but no matter which way you choose you still need to be able to have good technique. also i dont really like the idea of potentially fuckin up my skis especially when i pay a couple hundo for them

I don't know where your from but i sure can't ski the mountain 365 a year, so when my frined and i want to ski (and there is no snow because it is the summe)r, i set up a rail with that half foot patch of snow and have just a splended time sessioning it. But i see your point, in shanghi six crieghton has whole rail section, this do not agree with. -weRD

i think rails would be more fun (for me) if they were set up randomly all over the entire mountainand in different ways, but then again that will never happen of course....unless......nah prob never but its a thought. I think that just would be cool cause u could ski hit some moguls carve do whatever and then incorporate a couple rails in there and shit. prob make you a better rider to dealin wit the inconsistent setups.

nope, i disagree. jumps have the "wow" factor because they are bigger and more awe. but i think that real rails (not flat rails) are harder to do a 900 on or look steezy on, and actually think about the progression of both. you cant physically hit much bigger jumps, and the biggest jumps that you could do a trick on have had everything possible done on them, including style double flips and stylie 1440s. whereas, the "steeze" of rails is just starting to get incorporated... pretzels, switchups, 450s...etc people are doing them on rails , and they are starting to look good, and thats only going to increase as more tech tricks are learned, the more basic tricks look better... and the rail tricks that are starting to happen... more on the lip side, presses, pretzel switch... etc, then on big rails, and then you take them to urban. bs to fs switchups on quad kinks? and if you are talking about style, watch aaron bittners seg in Follow Me Around... tech stuff on urban that is so style... everybody says skiing is 3 years behind snowboarding, so that guy is out there for skiing...i cant see how rails could ever be played for tech or style

i would be watching the I Hate NY crew in the near future, they seem to have urban down to an art and are starting to do the beginning tricks that skiers are going to be doing for awhile... (switch lips, bs switchups, presses, steezy 6 kinks...etc)
watch murda, kfc...etc ya they are on fruitboots, but lots of that shit can be done on skis... 270 on, pretzel 3 switchup on a dfd urban... on skis in a decade or two?

why do you care what other people are doing. Rails give kids on the east coast something to do when we dont have enough snow to make huge booters like the ones out west. Rails will eventually progress like everything else is. And to the comment you made about people doing rails in the summer and landing in a pile of slush...who the hell cares. Skiing is skiing, and for some people that dont have 6 months to ski and only have 2 and a half its nice to get out with friends, have a good time, and just mess around and maybe learn some new things; i dont see a problem in that.

rails look like a good time i just never got into them. this year i think im going to take the time to learn them. at my local mountain there isn't much to do in the park besides rails. if in the rare case they have a good table you have to practicly straight line it from the top of the park to clear it since they put it on an almost flat slope.

wow, thanks for calling me a "fucking moron" that really accomplished alot. I realize that his style on rails is no doubt influential, but in reality slap on some XXXL clothes and a doo rag on any "elite" level skier and they could copy that shit. Why? because his tricks have no technical difficulty to them. T Heed is the exact opposite of what CJ is complaining about in this thread, he lacks difficulty but has mad steeze vs. having no style but mad trick difficulty. T Heed just doesn't bring it all to the table. I'm not saying Travis doesn't have sick style because he certainly does, but at the end of the day I think he is over rated, his skiing just doesn't impress me very much.

I think rails are lame, grinding down a rail looks nothing as nice as flying out of the halfpipe and getting mad air. Rail contests are ok, but they get old. More people enjoy watching halfpipe or big air

guaranteed most elite skiiers couldnt "slap on some XXXL clothes" and do what he does. he was doin sw 270 on pretzel 270 out in like 2004 when no one knew what a pretzel was. im pretty sure thats a trick with "technical difficulty". just cause he doesnt spin on and jump around on rails like most kids do doesnt mean he isnt doin hard tricks. i still wanna know what does impress you by the way.

That's totally up to the individual. What makes you say being an awesome skier should come first? I agree with you that being a better skier will in turn improve other aspects included in park, but everyone skis for their different reasons. Maybe a lot of skiers don't care if their skiing technique isn't racer perfect, as long as they can throw cab nines. It's not up to you to determine what the goal of every skier should be.

the answer is access the accss to pratice rails is much easier that jumps
, if you want to find a good jump to learn say a cork 7, it needs ot be fairly decent park or hit water ramps and spend a shit load of money,
but withr rails if you want to learn a 270, you can pratice all year round, even if your back yard,
