Rails, whats the hype about?

I think rails suck, dont get me wrong they're fun and all, but they suck. Woop dee doo, lets see who can spin around the most. Switch up after switch up gets annoying. Rails are getting to be maxed out. Everyone and their mother can 270, 450, pretzel ect, aslong as you put in a good few days into it. Sure rails could get longer/more gnar ect but theres nothing much innovative being done these days. I see potential in nose/tail press but after that where can it go? Its just more spinning and hopping. Vanular and the flatspins are dope sure, but thats a rare case. Urban is a different story tho. Urban is gnar and has crazy potential but honestly, the summer setups with a 1/2 foot patch of slush for a landing and people decked out in full ski gear is lame.
Why is it that rails are such a big part of skiing today? Ive seen hundreds of videos posted here where kids who can 270 pretzel, 450, switch this and that on any rail yet have troubble landing a 540 and look like shit doing it. Why is it that people put so much more effort into getting good at rails than actually learning how to jump/ski properly?
Oh and stop posting videos of your back yard 270s off. They suck and nobody wants to see it.

well.. you could just say skiing, whats the hype about? jumps are getting maxed out.. except in rare cases the double flips.. rails are just a part of skiing.. and not everyone can 450 on switch up switch up switchup pretzle 450 off.. in fact.. it is way hard to even pretzle 270 off.. just beucase everone that can do it makes it look easy..

It's just another aspect of the sport, if you like em, go for it, if you dont, than dont do them. Personally I suck at rails, but I definately want to get better.

its easier to get good at rails cause you can hike it a lot easier and get more hits in.presses are gunna be the new thing on rails.

people probably practice rails more because its more convenient. You can have a rail in your backyard but who has a large jump in their back yard? almost no one.

Also, while we're at it, jumping is played too. All you're doing is rotating in 3 different axes. Then you use your hand and grab shit, lame as fuck dudes. You're in the air for a few seconds if you're lucky. That's gayer than all hell.

skiing is an art, if you can make it look good then do it. It takes skill. Dont hat on rails

i like jumps better, but i think the reason skiing is a lot into rails is becasue people look at that and say, "that guy is nuts" and they want to see more. The average joe can watch somebody get hugh air doin a 360 and say, "well at least if he falls he is falling onto snow not onto those damned metal pipes." i think thats why skiing is getting crazy on rails because that is what the majority of people think is crazy.

I dunno how I feel about rails. They're definatly my weak point, I just don't really do them as much. They're not as fun as jumping or acctually skiing. They're something I do when the jumps suck and there's no powder. I rarely get up and say "I'm gonna go slide rails all day!"

So is that why rails are so popular? Beacuse its easier to get good at them?

Im down with rails and all, but honestly, Im sick of people coming off switch on rails, i swear to fucking god, its easier than coming off regular. Sooooo easy to come off switch on a rail, seriously.I would rather people just came off regular on urban rails and park shit.

I agree. Im not saying I dislike rails, they are fun but why do some people put so much effort into them and so little into actually becomming a good skier.

no people dont want to get good at it because its easier it just is easier to progress because you can hike a rail a lot easier then it is to hike a jump

There are definately many reasons for this. Top 2 being that they are easy and a lot less scary and dangerous than jumps.

its almost a new breed though. its like rail rats. there are park rats who spend all their time in the park then a sub breed who only spend their time in the park on rails. I think theyre sick but it is true there isnt too many different ways we can go with them aside from more spins on, ontop of and off. i think spin to win on rails is lame, like double switch up 270 out on a tiny little rail, but if its long and stalled out on a big rail its dope.

Thats the thing. Rails are easy. People get too much credit for something that takes 20 hikes to land.
Style also comes into this. Rails havent yet been maxed out so people arent concentrating on style as much as getting that 630 on. People can fo all 4 tens and every rotation immaginable so they have to work on style to be unique. As soon as people realise 450 on pret 450 is getting excessive more stlye will come into rails. I think what im trying to say is people dont have style on rails yet. Maybe thats what bothers me.

Why are blue runs popular? They're easy.
IMO, rails are just so much easier to progress on (until you get to big spins on and big sw ups) than jumps. And they're fun. And less intimidating. Personally, for that reason, I get bored very quickly with rails unless they're urban.

i prefer jumps over rails anyday, but if theres no good ones im totally happy doing rails. True, theres not too much to them except spinnning more and more on and off and switchups etc. but its still fun, dont hate

so you'd rather see who can spin fastest in the air instead of on a rail? maybe dont hate next time you see someone trying progressive "roller blade" tricks on a rail, becuase thats what its gonna come to for rail tricks to not get so repetative like you're saying.

i know in the east where ice landings can make jumps unhittable, rails can be a fun alternative.

Who ever mentioned any thing about spinnging fastest in the air or "roller blade" tricks. Congrats, you can pull somthing out of nothing.
Rails need one thing, STYLE.

I like doing rails and they can be really satisfying. But yeh the competition winning spinny switch up rails are crap! Kids in ridiculously expensive set-ups who cant ski properly cos all they do is spinny raily things really piss me off.
Rails dont get me anywhere near as excited as a good set of kickers do.

Its just fun dude! Esspecailly out here on the ice coast! and when there isnt snow. Jumps are ussally very bad out here in the east meaning they are no fun. out west there are good jumps and out there it seems like every kid and his mom can do a generic cork 7. I have nothing against them, they look pretty sweet! Im just saying they have more jumping options!

rails are fine so shut the fuck up. my mt still doesnt have a damn jump so maybe those people are trying to get good at the many rails that are set up, cause we have to wait till jan to get a decent sized jump up

I like this guy. As much emphasis as people have been putting on rails, its fun as hell don't get me wrong, being a good skier should be first and foremost. I see kids killin rails, but I see them ski down the rest of the way and its almost laughable.
Dominate rails, rip booters, but above all, be a good skier.

Rails Suck go back to the hood you park rats!! skiing powder is what skiing is about. Skiing powder sure is progressive, i mean you can make a turn on a steep slope, or a medium slope, or maybe jump a little cliff. yup powder is what makes the skier, man, all those park rats learning crazy rail tricks suck because i can ski powder turn after turn after turn just totally progressing the sport and my bag of tricks...

Ok, i understand the east vs west thing in regards to not having access to jumps/pow to ski. What still bothers me is why people keep pushing rails with bigger spins and more switch ups without working more on style. Its simple to 270 on and off but to make it look good is a chalange. Theres very few people out there that can make rails look good.

Just curious, who do you think is pushing style in rails now adays? I still feel that Travis Heed (circa wicked) was one of the smoothest sliders of his time and now ____?_____ is reppin it.

Yea nobody would dig his style if he didn't have huge clothes, I was never really impressed by his skiing other than when he cleaned haystack, that was really sick, but other than that all he does is slide rails and stand tall, yell at me, hate me, flame me, give me hell, I don't care if people get pissed at me for saying it but it's my opinion and I stick by it.

i personally am better at rails than i am at jumping. so i choose to do lots more rails than i do jumps becuz they are more fun for me and i dont look as crappy at skiing as when i try to do jumps and 3s and stuff.

just ski what you want to ski
if u only want to hit jumps then go a head
lots of people like both, but in some cases there are some people who only like jumps, or only rails
All times are Eastern (-5)
