BC Cheesewedge Advice

I'm gonna be setting up a few BC booters this year and I wanted some advice on how to setup a nice big cheesewedge. How do you start it off? Just start piling snow? How do you get the tranny right and so on....

best way (if it is possible) is to cut out big blocks and stack them
and then fill in with snow

does it matter?
anyway ya aesthetically blocks are the way to go and they're probly more solid anyway but i dont know it can be done with some snowpacks
if you just want get it up and you dont nessescarily have real wet snow you could get away with piling it , just setup skis in like a mold you know?

when we buil mogul kicker style jump, we plant our skis in the snow to do a mold, fill the shit with snow and lie on it to warm it up so when it colds down its solid

i think if you dont have good packable/blockable snow, then make as big a pile as you can, let it sit over night then carve it into the shape you want the next day, seems like it should settle into a pretty solid mass overnight though i dont actually know

Step 1. Dig out all the powder till you get to the harder snow.
Step 2. Make a square using the shovel pushing hte shovel down vertically.
Step 3. Stack into the shape of a jump.
Step 4. Stomp on the jump with your skis on.
Step 5. Shave away snow until desired look/kick of the jump.

The most important thing is picking a location that will require the least amount of inrun digging. A bumpy inrun can take hours to flatten. Start by making a frame for the sides of the jump out of your skis (snowboards work better, but skis are okay). If you're not gonna cut blocks, roll big snowballs to stack instead. Salt every few layers. Once you have the jump built, sidestep the inrun several times and then have everyone sideslip it a few times (once again, snowboards work better for this too).

it's a lot easier to make a jump with blocks. as some have said, you can make a frame out of skis or boards, but it's easier IMO to make it out of 2 layers of blocks, then just fill with snow. you will need a LOT more snow than you think, cause it will pack. After you build, take 30 minutes at least to let it freeze up a little... park it hard... if your lip collapses, it's really hard to build back up, and it might screw you up if you try to spin off it as it collapses. If possible, bring about 4 gallons of water to dedicate to the freezing process.  Make sure that the top of your lip is strong.

If you get out there earlyyou can complete a booter mission in a day.

dig down to harder layers of snow if thats available. thats where the blocks come from. but keep in mind, some booters can take over a day to build, so dont half ass it after like 30 minutes of digging

Making blocks is kind of self-explanatory.  You just chop out the shape of the block and scoop underneath; if the snow is packed enough you'll have a block in your shovel.  Another tip for making the lip:  Leave 6-8" flat after the lip, if you make the lip at the end of the jump you'll just break it off.

^ yeh thats gold advice - the flat section beyond the lip is crucial.
im going over old ground here, but i always build a U shaped base with the biggest blocks of snow i can get (open end towards the inrun), then build up the height from front to back with blocks till the back of the kicker is the right height. Then fill in the middle with whatever - the wetter or more solid the better.

If you want blocks, buy yourself an ice saw, its the only way to go. And yeah, as Grant said, go down deep for solid snow. I'm going to attempt to build one this weekend out of bounds, we'll see if I can get it large enough to keep hitting it all year.
