i went to the queens cup last year and it was a super chill comp. i wanna go again, but i am a little dissapointed in the format of the competition. i understand the point of having teams so that there is no pressure, but i remember last year i didnt like the team thing because i felt obligated to hit the same features as my group and "ski like a team" cause the teams that were getting scored the best were training each other. i know this year we are being judged as individuals, and as teams but i guess i just dont get the point of a team if you are essentially competing against your teammates? it is also hard to stand out when you all hit the same features right after each other. my suggestion to make this comp even better then last year is to split up into 2 or 3 or however many groups and do a jam session for an hour while the other girls watch. this way it would be no pressure session and it will be based on an overall impression type of thing. you could even do a finals round where you take the top 3 from each group. i really wanna go this year anyway but i guess i was just curious about what other girls think cause i havent really heard many opinions about the comp.
i agree with what you're saying, a jam format would be better for more experienced riders. but for someone like me, who hasn't entered a competition before, a team format is a lot more comforting. the attention's less focused on me, and i get coaching from a pro; that sounds pretty sick to me. but yeah, an individual format would definitely benefit more experienced girls, and would make it more of a competition.
a jam format is not like usopen slopestyle format. it would be just like you were lapping the park any day with your friends, hense all of the attention is not focused on one person. it would take the pressure off so that if you mess up on a feature you will have more oppurtunities to do it again and you will feed off the vibes of the other girls in the park just like you would in the team format. i think only getting 2 runs in a team format is more of a us open competiton style then just one big jam sesh. i really dont like comps either and am by no means experienced at them, and i understand your point about your first competition, thanks for your perspective, i figured the comfort factor of a team is huge for a lot of people
i am having a hard time bringing myself to spend 500 dollars on this comp. i heard from my really good friend that she was stuck on some shitty team and didn't have any fun at all. she was better than her coach.
i was at the comp last year not competing but on the side helping out ash. i know for a fact that the girl who killed it the hardest, whitney wickes, got an invite to the Jon Olson invitational because she was the best single rider at the comp. so even if it is team format and you don't like how that is and you want to just do your own thing, just go along with the team but kill it and show the judges. you alone can raise the score of the team if you are really standing out or maybe if Jon and Jacob are judging again get an invite to the invitational. This comp is just really to get a bunch of girls together to show that we are just as good as the boys, and that we can progress from each other. The team format gives girls the chance to learn and grow from the other girls they are riding with, to get other girls advice and input as well as getting the chance to meet, ride with and learn from some of their favorite pros. It helps a lot of girls gain confidence to try new things when they see other girls doing it.
i know the comps expensive but i am sure thats unavoidable with insurance, paying park city, lift tickets, getting the pros in, ect. comps are very expensive to put on and the cost is really un avoidable.
if any of your girls need a place to stay or have any questions, let me know!!! i know i didn't compete last year but i trained a couple of my girlfriends and i am going to be one of the biggest soccer mom cheerleaders at the comp!!!!!!!
i hope to see all of you girls out here this year killing it!!!!
It sounds like a camp/competion which is a pretty cool idea because you probably learn something while you are there if not anything else. If you have the money, i def think its worth it.
yea whitney killed it last year and won best trick which was only being judged off the last jump. thats why i think a jam format would be sick because it would be overall impression, not just 1 jump, which defeats the purpose of a slopestyle comp anyway
another thing by saying that whitney was the hands down best skier in the comp makes it seem like she was the only one who threw down. Maybe you couldnt see Anna Segals lincoln loops that she stomped both runs on the first jump or Shawndreas switch 270s or a number of other tricks that deserved attention. you were sitting by the bottom jump the entire time and clearly have an outside perspective, espcially because you didnt compete and dont plan to this year.
haha yes amanda, i think ill go too. i want another dirty jersey style pic taken by you.
