Frozen Video Camera

Has it happened to anyone else? I had my camera outside today for around 2 and a half hours in minus 26 celsius. Now it won't play tapes back. Anyone know why or how this can happen in cold weather?

P.S.- I hit my first handrail and I want to see my footy. :-(

yeah, usually the problem is the batteries. Batteries won't work right at low temperatures, but if you give them a bi to warm up they should work fine.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking. It makes different pitched noises when it rewinds and fast forwards now.

And also, this is all after a new battery.

There could be condensation inside the camera. If you go from really cold to really warm temperatures moisture will build up and cause it not to work.

yo check the manual, every camera has different temperature limits, i use hdr-fx1 and it has like a -20 rating or sumthing, but it could be moisture in it, i would say let it sit in ur house at room temperature and dry out, then in like 2 days try it

werd take the battery off when the tape area is open and leave it for a night to get all the condensation out. see if that helps at all.

well if you do get it to work next time when you take it with you put it inside a sweater/blanket inside your bookbag or something and let it sit outside for a while, then use it, and do the same when you are coming in. THe sweater/blanket will act as an insulator and the temp change will happen alot slower and less of a chance of that happening again.

Never playback tapes until well after you camera has ajusted to room temperature (and your tapes too). Never use tapes/cameras taht clash in temperture you might end up seazing up the tape on the mechanism. I usually leave mine in the bag when bringing it inside, let it chill for at LEAST an hour and then bring it out to room temperature for a sooth transition. Never playback in the field either unless it's warm.
