Hey Guys,
Stumbled on this Quote in this past October issue of "Skiing" Magazine:

"Lions and Tigers and Bro's, Oh My!" "We love "Progression" and all forms of new-schoolery. But a closed-to-the-public bro-fest full of so much self-love that it verges on a circle jerk? Thats where we draw the line. Such was the 2006 Orage Masters Competition held last May in Mammoth, California. Advertised as "skiing's anti-comp", it featured 9 pro teams, who dressed in elaborate costumes to help them revel in their own radness -if you think The Wizard of Oz is Rad." This blurb was followed by a photo of Simon Dumont boosting out of the pipe in a Lion costume with the caption: "Simon Dumont: In Search of some Courage."

Now everyone before the all-out massacre of Skiing Magazine that I'm sure is to follow this post ensues, I'm trying to keep a subjective and balanced viwepoint here, do you think this is just Skiing magazine being overly harsh and disrespecful, or are they making a somewhat valid (if poorely stated) point? As easy as it is bto dismiss "skiing" as a stodgy close-minded magazine for rich middle-aged bald guys from the midwest with Condo's in Beaver Creek, they do occasionally produce some great articles and photos, some of which I dare say almost compete with Freeskier. So what are everyone's thoughts on this? Regardless I think we can all agree that Simon Dumont is farrrr from needing to find some Courage. I'd like to see the author of that article sack-up and pull a cork 5 out of the pipe in a LION SUIT nonetheless!! :) :)

I think they are totally out of their element to say that. I don't know what is with the "bro-ing" they talk about, but that is not representative of how most people conduct themselves. They have no right to say that, and it is ironic, because the real "bros" seem to be themselves.

I think there's a point there, but what's wrong with skiing with a bunch of friends who are really really ridiculously good? Just because it's mostly dudes doesn't mean you have to portray it as a testosterone fest. Isn't that exactly what every other sport is?

The author is just bashing on the pro's in a similar way that everyone bashes people on this site. I don't think it even matters if the skier is amazing. Certain people if they don't like something have to try to put it down whether it be clothing style, equipment, etc.

it doesn't seem like they can even understand the concept of the competition. It's just there to have fun, it's like a way for the pro's to wrap up the season in a good way without having to worry about anything

That was totally out of proportion and blatantly making fun of the masters. I was there... it's pretty much the most fun thing I have ever done skiing related... everyone is just having so much fun, and is so stoked on everything, and mammoth does a sick job with the park and taking care of everyone... it's just all around an awesome event, and skiing magazine can fuck off.

What the fuck does Skiing magazine know about the Masters — or about anything, for that matter? I'm sure some halfwit editor saw a photo of Simon and thought, "Oh, this'll be something good to make fun of." Maybe they're just pissed because noone invited them to the "bro-fest."

what do they mean by "closed-to-the-public?" Are they saying it sucks because its not an open? Because other than that it wasn't closed...I sat right on the side of the run.

they have a point. it's not poorly stated. it's very well stated. it made me laugh even though it was directly talking shit on people like me.

chill out. have a sense of humor. and realize that there is much more to skiing than the little corner of it that we live in. and there are many different types of people in the world besides the limber, narcissistic, recognition-hungry stuntmen that we all are.

i think they are just pissed at how big freestyle is becoming, its prolly taking away from some of there revenue. non the less, i dont think anyone should doubt dumonts courage.... maybe read the article in the october freeskier about how dumont knocked the fuck outt of a 6'6 sweedish dude. oh ya and for all who didnt know... hes around 5'3 and he hucks like mad. id like to see his criticstry to pull some of the shit he does

haha author of this thread was right: it just turned into a bunch of ignorant posts bashing Skiing magazine. 

I think what most of you guys have failed to realize is that the quote in question was written by one man's opinion. He gave an editorial on what he felt was a joke of an event, and to an outsider; c'mon if you saw a bunch of guys tooling around in animal costumes wouldn't your first impression be that they were kinda stupid?

The author doesn't represent Skiing mag as a whole, so stop saying Skiing sucks. If you dont like it, dont read it. It's a decent magazine for what it is. Saying it sucks because it doesn't necessarily agree with everything "newschoolish" as it said, or because it doesn't focus just on the side of the sport we enjoy the most doesn't mean it sucks. Baby-boomers are still the largest demographic, and not only do magazines and such target them, but resorts do too. Why do you think that resorts that used to be known for their untamed terrain are now groomed to death? Because they're getting too old to be "hot dogging" and love the corderoy. 

I happen to think this whole "gangsta" culture is a bunch of stupidity, but I'm not going to go out of my way to restrict someone's personal expression. However, i may write an editorial that gives my opinion; MY opinion, and wouldn't be the opinion of the magazine that printed it.

the only thing I dont like about the masters is that its called the "anti-comp"
theres prizes and teams, and teams competing for prizes. That being the one off defintion of competition.
Other than that, it looks like fun.
Coool features and costumes. woot!
Skier or skiing or whatever it is isnt a very good magazine. They always talk about the same thing. They dont seem to get that some people like to ski park, some people like to crash gates, and some people like to snowplow down garbage heaps in saskatchewan.
Its all good aint it?

Speak for yourself Symms. On limberness personally, I can't touch my toes; and on narcissism generally, not every NSer has a signature taking up 40-some lines. ;)

While I always appreciate the thoughtful posts of NS old-timers and I consider myself at the ripe old age of 22 to be one, I can't agree with you guys on this one. Sure, not everyone is the same, and sure, Skiing magazine pampers to baby-boomers who have no clue what the Masters is and like to laugh at a skier dressed up in a lion suit. But that doesn't mean that Skiing magazine should feel empowered to mock something that it really knows nothing about. Based on personal experience with Skiing mag editors and the few times I've read their mag, I'm almost 100% sure that their criticism of the Masters is based almost entirely on that single photo: "A freestyle skier in a lion suit, let's make fun of him." I don't think anyone would disagree that the Masters is one of the most fun and unconventional events around, and I think whoever wrote that took a real cheap shot for cheap laughs. I'm not getting up in arms about it because I don't expect anything better from Skiing anyway; I'm just a bit disappointed by the magazine that was supposedly trying to make a move into our little branch of skiing. I mean, these are the guys who are running the U.S. Open.

Crock360, your point would be valid if the writer hadn't conspicuously used the pronoun "we" several times. "We" doesn't work too well in an editorial stating someone's personal opinion.

Waynewong, your posts always crack me up, but I don't think this has anything to do with XXXL pants and gangsta culture.

And last but not least, the guy ripped on The Wizard of Oz. I don't think you can sink much lower than that. :)

Skiing magazine said that Park City was the 17th best place to ride POWDER in the U.S. Based on that alone, I would classify it as a "suck" magazine.
