Skiboarding

I started skiboarding (in conjunction with skiing) when Line first started and only made skiboards. I think it's great fun. However, I find that the skiing community doesn't take them seriously and laughs at the mention of them. I could do the same things on my skiboards as I can on my twintips and everybody would just roll their eyes and laugh, but doing things on my skis is, for some reason, 100% more acceptable. For God's sake, Line, one of the most popular ski companies today, only made skiboards at first and it wasn't until a few years later that they started making twintip skis. Where's the respect? Can somebody explain to me why skiboards are laughed at? I'm at a complete loss here.

(No, they're not called "snowblades". That's the model name of solomon's skiboard.)

because 90% of people that use them are 25 year old geeks that cant ski, and the other 10% is 10 year olds who think theyre trick skis

I agree with the 90% part, but the 10 year old part? They do tricks fine. I have 3 pairs of line skiboards, all of them Mike Nick Pro models. They're symmetrical twintips. Skiboarding was in the X-Games before freeskiing was. Why do you think they're not capable of tricks?

if there was people on them at my hill that could actually do something i might have a little bit more respect for them, but as it stands most of them are really lame. If you can do cool shit on them thats cool, but everyone ive seen so far cant so

That's a good answer. Thank you. I guess this leads me to another question... Why are good skiers reluctant to try them if they are capable of demonstrating that they are not 25 year old geeks that suck at skiing? Is it just that skiboarding's image has been tainted by n00bs?

they are for groms who cant handle real skis, and think they will be able to spin faster and do flips with them on.

That's funny, because I actually find it easier to spin and land on full size skis. I guess you're right though - why would somebody skiboard if they can ski well? I guess there's not really any advantage except that they're fun to mess around with.

legit skiboarding isn't bad, but its the 10 year old kid who wears jeans and are stoked that they can do flailing back-scratchers and spread-eagles on them that are annoying.

I began skiboarding before I switched to twin tips. I had fun while skiboarding. They're definitely a different tool altogether for ripiing the mountain than skis. I know for someone my size, they just couldn't handle the abuse (the non-release bindings actually caused me to snap a board in half) so I switched to twin tips. Anyway, I think a majority of the people on here flame them because of what they see on the hill. There are some pretty good skiboarders out there, and even when you see the skills of groups like b-crew, it's hard to take it seriously what with PVC pipes on the floor. Anyway, www.skiboardsonline.com has pretty good videos of people who can actually skiboard. I don't see them as an excuse for people who can't ski, because obviously the starter of this thread proves that that is not the case, I see skiboards as a different tool to snow slide, just like snowboards and snowskates.

They are very capable of doing tricks on.. I guess for the majority, "too capable" of doing tricks. I guess because they lack poles, and length, the tricks don't really look nice.

I mean, I have yet to see a good skiboarder that did not look floppy in the air.

Well they are a little unstable compared to skis in the air because you don't have as much mass to throw around, which results in more "floppyness". At least that's what I've found from experience. Thanks for the responses guys! Those answers are precisely what I was looking for.

actually i just got myself some skiboards. i'm not 25 not 10, used to ski, and the reason i started to skiboard is cuz i felt confined on my snowboard, and i felt that skis werent the best choice because i'd hav to re-learn technique alll over again. and 180 on skis is not hard.

^?... anyway.. i think they look rediculous,, not that it matters (dont hate) i just laugh when i see someone stick a rail or a spin on them.. they are kinda fun to goof off on though.. actually i have a pair in my barn that im going to take up tomorrow after reading this..

I can see skiboards if your just fuckin around everynow and then maybe, but for me the fact is i think theyd really limit your capabilities. They're so small that you can't do anything with them, there's a reason why as you progress in skiing you get longer skis because you have more edge to work with. Skiboards are ridiculous unstable at any speed and carving into turns and in my opinion the only thing they might be useful for is screwing around in the park because the increased length on skis is better for groomers, trees and powder arent even really capable of being skied with skiboards. So basically i just don't see a reason to use skiboards because it seems like real skis are better in all areas of skiin, and it just looks downright silly

theres a good chance that if half the kids on ns switched to skiboarding, theyd all get sponsored. its too easy to do most shit, unless it requires speed. oh, and skiboarders look like fucking fools. i was at a rail jam at belleayre last year and a skiboarder was dressed up in an ape costume yelling and shit. snaked me on more than one occasion too. basically, skiboarders are all too unathletic to ski and too immature to do much else. Yes thats a generalization, but i stand by it

who the hell would sponsor them? there are not enough skiboard companies to sponsor all those kids.

immature? have you READ any posts on this website? i beg to differ, i think the skiing population is a lot more immature than the skiboarder.

i'll tell you why skiboards suck.  a few weeks ago my roomate and i were at solitude, and after we got off the lift, we stopped and looked at some fresh tracks across honeycomb that a few people skinned up to get.  there was a lot of powder up there, and the lines were nice.

a douchenozzel on skiblades (about 30-35, with a wifey and 2 children ages 9-14 also on ski blades) stopped next to my roomate and asked him where the lift was to get up there so they could find the powder.  he said this in all seriousness. on skiblades. you've got to be fucking kidding me.

actually ben is in amsterdam right now taking in all the city has to offer a few days before he heads over to romania to compete....thanks to skiboarding.  it's true there are people on the mountain who make it look bad but the same thing goes for skiing and snowboarding.  if you've got talent you can make anything look good.
