What width for a metal rail?

i was thinking of making like a 12 ft. steel flat rail? how wide should it be, i don't want it to be to hard to slide

like 3-5.5 inches should be fine, im making one with a width of 4 inches...

4 inches is probably good if you dont want it to be hard and that is usually standard park width for tubular metal rails. then again, if it is only 12 feet 3 inches would prolly work as well. although i wouldnt go any smaller than that.

all the rails a my local place are 4" flat bars or 4" double barrles and i think there a good width.
