damn... that's crazy, they are supposed to be doing internet access over the power grid too

Thats cool, I listened to a team at the UW Nasa Space Grant talk about that over the summer. There are a lot of challenges to overcome with this idea though, its a lot of energy just mucking around in open air.

Not that any of you care but I'm an EE by trade and have been thinking about this for years. I first had this idea in 2001 where I tried to pitch the Idea of 'transmitting' power via induction from one coil to another. I got laughed at but started setting up test rigs in a my shop. I was able to get a few inches transmission with the equipment i had. I was pretty optomistic but I guess i was just pitching the idea to people with out enough foresite to realise the potential...OH well...Good luck to MIT.

its gonna be cool in a couple of years when devices lie that work and we find out that being anywhere near that electromagnetic field gives instant tumours

you mean like how we realized that cell phone transmissions might give us tumors too?
yeah...really cool...

no like you would have a laptop and as long as its within 40 feet of an adapter plugged to a power outlet it would be charging. or on a bigger scale
you could have a tower (or abunch of them) in a city and as long as your in range your stuff would be getting charged your cell phone would never need to be plugged same with cellphones.
in fact if that was the case we wouldnt even really need batteries.
would be cool. but im still really worried about how much stuff like that would fuck up your body. electric radiation flying through the air like that cant be good

Everything has an effect on you these days. Eating a piece of steak gives you side effects with all the hormones given to cows and other animals. Emissions from cars, microwaving your leftovers. Everything is gonna make your lifespan shorter, so why not make everything else a little more efficient to match that. Instead of waiting for something to charge for 3 hours, make it charge in 30 minutes, but lose a little of your life. It all balances out.

The "non" radioactive thing is the important part... every second we get somuch radiation passing through us anyways, this would just be more of the same...

i was thinking about this idea a few years ago when i was vaccuming. i thought it was impossible without serious radiation flying through the air. cool idea but its gonna cause cancer.

would it be easy to steal power? somewhat like using somebody elses wireless internet hook up?

i prefer the idea of the new types of batteries being designed like the nano-generators and tiny hydrogen fuels cells.

I would like to be able to make that decision myself, rather than be subject to that sort of thing unwillingly...which would proably be the case with large scale transmission. I think its an epic idea and was actually contemplating it no more than a month ago. However, im going to need to see some in depth medical reserach before i throw my support behind large scale implementation.

ever see the battery chargers that don't require a plug???
It's like a plate that you place batteries, cellphones on and they charge without having to plug them in.

Those are some high tech toothbrushes eh?
If any of you have any more free time you should check out the popular science website because they hav articles about new technology like this all the time. Articles about making invisible material and bulletproof liquids are just a few that I saw recently.

yah, as i read that i was liek wow this cant be good for us, and will most likely lead to our ultimate doom... we will all be mutants in the nedxt 5 generations if this is the power we use.. it aint gonna be great for our human bodies i can tell already
