Headed West...help me!

To make it short and simple...I've skiied MN hard for the last two years...and by hard, I mean every Min. that I can. This year Im gonna focus on park and pipe...however...my best friend's dad is taking him and I to Montana over Xmas break...I have no clue what to expect or how to prepare...The slope to my school opens this weekend...any help?

Im also planning some Backcountry with sleds with a friend from near Jackson Hole...I spose this is stupid being inexperienced...but I really want to get into it...

as far as your backcountry trip is concerned:

see if you can take a small avalanche class before you go, bring a shovel, probe and beacon.

Powder straps as well, you don't wanna lose your ski.



Be prepared for big mountains... a LOT bigger than you're used to in Maine. The weather gets super cold in Montana, so also be sure to bring clothing for a -10 degree day... or clothing for a 50 degree day.

Hey, thanx for the avy advice...Ill most definatly look into a class...and MN is Minnesota...Its alot of small icy hills, to say the least...

fuck backcountry, no offense, but you'll probably be over your head with jsut a fuckgin sickass huge mountain, and backcountry woudl jsut complicate things/make things really fuckign dangerous for you.  taking one avi class and heading out into unfamiliar terrain is pretty fucktarded.  my first trip out i was just fuckign floored by how big it was and had the time of my life inbounds.  my suggestion...dont look at a trail map-just look at the huge fuckign mountain and explore the shit out of it,

You'll be fine and have a sick time... just make sure you're with people that know what they're doing when you get out BC... listen to them and be safe. It'll be fucking rad.

Yeagh these are two trips...
Resort in MT...just out of Bozeman...

And one near Jackson Hole...
My friend is an experienced bc skiier from what I know...and Im a really experienced sledder...Between the two of us we figured that we could probably work it out...although I do agree that I might be over my head...the best pow that Ive skiied was only like knee deep...yeagh Im embasressed

There's three resorts just out of Bozeman:  Bridger, Big Sky, and Moonlight.

As for your backcountry plan, what happens if your friend gets buried and you're the one that has to find him and dig him out?  I'd suggest taking an avalanche safety course or finding somebody here in town to go with you just to be safe.

Yeagh for sure...the snow club at our school puts on safety classes all the time...plus Im working on getting a skipatrol job at my hill...and its at big sky...Is That Good?
