Female skiers showing sexuality

Out of curiousity, I wanted to get a feel on some opinions and perspectives about female skiers showing that they can be sexy as well as athletic.
I'm specifically refering to last October's issue of FREESKIER magazine which featured Sarah and Kristi on the cover, Charlotte Moats in a thong, Aleshia Cline naked, Marie in a bathing suit, etc etc.
Am wondering the guys point of view, but girls opinions would be great as well...
I am wondering if you think it deters from their talent and instead gives an image of a 'pretty face/body' rather than a killer athlete, if it gives the impression that they are relying on their looks rather than the talent. Girls - Do you think the pictures in that particular magazine were 'slutty' (for lack of better word) or was it tastefully done? Guys - do you lose respect for their athletic side or does it add to the girl? Do you still look at them FIRST as being a ripping skier and SECOND as being sexy? Am just curious about this all so any opinions I'd be interested to hear! -MRO

i think it was rather untasteful. it's true that sex sells and that's sad. women are always used as objects to sell sex among both men and women. men are used to sell as well but not as often. in freeze, they use a lot of women to sell the sport. look at the lifties of the month-they always take these good-looking girls and have them pose half-naked to sell the sport. kristi and sarah and the rest of them may have gotten into these magazines by having talent, but now there talent isn't being ignored. now they are being used to sell the sport w/ their sexiness. meanwhile you have the men who still have their skiing pics put in the mags. many times, the men may pose tastefully for a cover, but never to my knowledge(unless this has happened and i'm not aware of it) will u see a magazine cover w/ them half-naked. but if u use these kind of pictures of women, there should definitely be an equal balance of skiing and lifestyle pics

yah, i understand that sexiness sells, so basically what they were doing is selling their bodies, which i find completely ridiculous, but on some levels i can relate to it. personally i would rather see JP Auclair (hottest skier guy) skiing, than half naked. but i guess that's the difference between men and women. women are cool, men are not. and yah, i would have liked the article more if it had more picturs of them skiing in it, but i do give them respect for the guts and self confidence it took to take those pictures.

I think as long as they can rip, the sexuality is just an add...but in the begining when youre trying to get there you can lose being taken seriously...like anna kournikova..she sucks but people still like her because shes 'hot' ...meh...and i think no matter what you do,if youre female your viewed in a way where youre pitted against being attractive rather than being prime in the sport...fucking men. :-P

Part of the problem, is that at the light table, we see more lifestyle shots of female skiers than we see action shots of them, in fact, so far from the slide submissions this year,m there is like a 3 to one life style to action shot ration of female skiers, maybe, just maybe there will be more action shots of female skiers if the top photogs would take the time to shoot them on terrain htey are comfortable with, and just blow them off cuz there not skiing hte same thing as morrision. Trust me the mags are definatly wanting more shots of ripping female skiers actually skiing.

I hated that Freeskier issue. A magazine like that should focus on their skiing ability, not how big their boobs are. That magazine reminds me of People magazine or something gay like that. Seriously, I am never buying Freeskier again, unless they start covering skiing, instead of fashion.

Me personally I think that if a girl can rip I really respect that but that makes her exponetially more attractive. But I think a few tasteful like modeling shots wouldnt reduce the amount of respect I'd give her but if i started seeing her like half naked in every Freeskier I'd start to question her integrety.

i found it very distastefull, that issue was degrading,. it implied that girls in this sport need to have looks to get noticed. i mean honestly. kristy and sarah have been 'pro' for a few years and they both had their pretty 'shitty' (compaired to pro males) and i doubt neither of them would ahve been pro at that stage of their careers if they didnt ahve the looks.
its just like kristy. i have no respect for that girl at all. shes bitchy( i've met her) really snobby, she is getting alot better skiing wise now, but that noridca poster, killed it for me. i can overlook the bitchy, but as soon as you need or allow your body to be portrayed like that in a poster a SKI poster nontheless, is tasteless. and gives the wrong impression to other girls trying to enter the sport as well all the guys who habve the poster will expect and want ski girls to be the same.
sarah on the other hand, has got a head on her shoulders. shes smart and pretty and is in it for the love of the sport not to flaunt her body around. oh and shes not intimidated by other girls. whereas kristy seems to be threatened by them.

i highly disagree with this statement 'and i doubt neither of them would ahve been pro at that stage of their careers if they didnt ahve the looks' there not pro models there pro skiiers and the people that write there cheques and support them are a little smarter then that.... or else they shouldnt be working anywhere but a daycare center with 3 year olds.... they are 2 of the best female 'newschool' skiers and i dont think if they were butt ugly they would be any farther back in the game then where they are now....

It is a matter of opinion, but male skiers do photo shoots too, they get made up but not like a girl would be made up obviously. I mean sure you may see female proskiers in like a bathing suit or something everyonce in a while but i mean, thats what girls wear. If you cam across Sarah Burke or Kristi at the pool would you loose respect for them because they're not 100% clothed. I dont think itd be good for their image to like pose half naked all the time, but we're not freakin mormons, well i guess you might be if you ski out of Park City haha

well i missed out the first time around so im just going to add one thing...

It's very discouraging to me that this sort of precedent has been set by pioneering women in the freesking movement. Does this mean that if I want recognition in the skiing industry, ill have to follow suit? Most likely. Seems being attractive is pretty fucking important in all aspects of life...its not supposed to be in sport, but is becomeing more so dayly.

What about kelly clark though? she is one ugly woman.

and meg...i don't know how you ski...obviously very well, but anyway...kristi's got nothing on you outside of that, with or without clothes.

It is unfortunate that women are portrayed so much differently than men are in sport magazines. Many folks have said it though, sex does sell. Warren Miller (cheeze ball though he may be, still has lots of insights on the industry) said in a keynote address here last winter that skiing needs to have more sex in it. He talked about the last boom in the industry being in the 70s when everyone was rocking the tight pants and shagging in the woods. Whatever that is worth. So on one hand, that's the way it is, but that doesn't make it right.

Lets face it though, Freeskier is in the business of selling magazines, and they are going to sell more to the boys who were posting the 'She's Hot' posts on here if there are attractive, marginally dressed women on the cover and inside. There are lots of women who rip and do well in contests, but those women in the article happen to be particularly comely, and you can bet that article passed the editor beacuse they were hot, beacuse that is what sells the mag and makes the dollars.

I kinda found the issue distastefull as well...As well as most of the girls that replied to this threead, yeah their should have been more photos. Although I see where it was a good way to give the girls some media..the mag could have given just a face shot and a sick ski shot for each...also, I thought it was pretty sad when I was around boys who woulf flip throguh the mag, and come across a girl who wasn';t as particularly 'attractive' as maybe some of the others..and their initial comment would be...'Ewwww what the fuck's that chick doing in this mag'..and stuff ike that. So in that case, yes the pictures too kaway from what girls are trying to accomplish, skiingwise.

i guess what it all comes down to is that if we (girls) dont want to be portrayed as sex idols, we have to give them something better to work with. so we all need to go out there and try our hardest and get as good as we possibly can, because that WILL sell.

Sorry Meg I was way too lazy to read all those posts. but yea. I would like to see more pictures of the girls skiing than just looking sexy. like if I want porn, I have the internet. but yea, I think its fine for girls to want to show that they are sexy and shit, but I think that it is kinda taking away from their talent. If they were like - here is a picture of the girl ripping it up and here is what she looks like.. that would rule, but they don't seem to have the skiing shots in the mags and that kinda anoys me. yep.

Valid point on Kristi and the Nordica posters, but if I do recall in an article she actually stated that she didn't like the first poster when she saw it, because it had been altered and probably also because of how it portrayed her. But that seems to be how Nordica, not Kristi chose to do her ads.
Skiing is totally a male dominated sport, although these girls have all brought alot more recognition to the female aspect, I'm sure that 95% of Freeskiers readers are male. And how many times have all the guys on here posted something in regards to 'who's the hottest girl in skiing' and I'm sure every member of this site, whether male or female checked it out. Sure there was a few skimpy pictures of the girls in the mag, but look at it this way, sex sells regardless of how you look at it, personally when I looked through the magazine the last thing I thought about was whether or not they were being degraded, I just read about their accomplishments, checked out the pics and left it at that. Sarah is known to compete alongside the guys and hold her own. She fights so hard for the opportunity to compete with the guys when a girls division doesn't exist at a comp. These are the girls who give it their all and are paving the way and bringing recognition to all up and coming females in the sport. So rather then be offended ladies look at it as an accomplishment that there was two phenomenal female skiers on the front of a magazine that targets extreme athletes.
Yah so you can totally say that sex sells, and they showed a sexy aspect of each of the skiers, but think about the majority of time all of these ladies spend in ski gear, training and being one of the guys and then think, not only did they get to be portrayed as skiers who rip, they also got to be portrayed as sexy female athletes, which is different from the stereotypical tomboy etc....

Great post J.D. I thoroughly agree.

I think the real concern is being overlooked. If Freeskier wants to shed their pretty boy glamour image, they gotta do more than sexy photo shoots. Its great eye candy, but are they forgetting that it is a ski mag? They need to couple those 'sex' shots with skiing action, otherwise they're walking on territory that is covered by all the mainstream glamour mags. I mean, its cool, but stick to the topic at hand! Show some sick ski shots with those eye candy shots and you'll credit those ladies with both of their 'talents'.

Freeskier knows what they're doing. They know their audience, and how to put together a mag that appeals to them. I doubt that many people chose to not buy that issue because two beautiful and incredibly talented skiers were on the cover.
When Sarah and Kristi are riding, they blend in with the rest ofthe guys. That Freeskier issue showed their feminine side while supporting the idea that this sport is for girls too. I think that it's fantastic that they gave recognition to a bunch of different women in one issue. The women in freeskiing issue was able to give credit to some very talented skiers that are building the foundation for women in future years. This is a nice contrast to the norm of this industry where women are often overlooked, and are rarely featured in ski magazines. The fact that they made room for 6 women to be featured opened room for Marie Martinod to get the publicity that she has earned and doesn't often see in North American magazines.
Having said that, I agree that some of the pictures were not the classiest shots ever, and I think that each girl in there deserved at least one skiing shot along with their modelling shot. All of the girls in the mag can definately rip, and their talents were not adequately portrayed in that issue of Freeskier, but it's a step in the right direction. I would rather see a mix of skiing and lifestyle shots of the girls than nothing at all.

Why settle for that ? Why can't the ladies have their piece of the pie, regularly, like everyone else? It sounds as though its like some charity case by putting them in the mag. Why can't they have photos without it being a big deal? There are a pile of women out there are a really tearing it up. Albeit there isn't as many as guys, but it really souldn't be a big deal by including them regularly in the press. All of a sudden the girls get their 15 minutes, and its a fashion shoot? Thats awesome, and keep it up Freeskier, but where are the skiing shots? I thought all the photos were great looking, edgy and tasteful all in one - But where are the skiing shots?!

I don't think that the mags have reached a point where they've killed every shot and now its time to move on to the glamour shots. Its a struggle to pick up a mag and get a solid dose of skiing shots alone. I think once they've covered this issue, THEN they can move on to the glitz and glamour.

Regardless, too much of an issue has been made of this already. All I want to say is more skiing, more skiing, more skiing !
