Female skiers showing sexuality

Out of curiousity, I wanted to get a feel on some opinions and perspectives about female skiers showing that they can be sexy as well as athletic.
I'm specifically refering to last October's issue of FREESKIER magazine which featured Sarah and Kristi on the cover, Charlotte Moats in a thong, Aleshia Cline naked, Marie in a bathing suit, etc etc.
Am wondering the guys point of view, but girls opinions would be great as well...
I am wondering if you think it deters from their talent and instead gives an image of a 'pretty face/body' rather than a killer athlete, if it gives the impression that they are relying on their looks rather than the talent. Girls - Do you think the pictures in that particular magazine were 'slutty' (for lack of better word) or was it tastefully done? Guys - do you lose respect for their athletic side or does it add to the girl? Do you still look at them FIRST as being a ripping skier and SECOND as being sexy? Am just curious about this all so any opinions I'd be interested to hear! -MRO

Sure it great to see a good looking girl skiing, but I much rather see a good skier vs. a so-so skier with a pretty face. Having both, like Sarah Burke for instance, is just a plus.

my opinion is quite simple
lets face it. the ski industry is a male dominated sport alot like many other professional sports.
so sometimes when woman get into it, they get stereotyped as butch, shemales, tomboy, so on and so forth.
so i think what freeskier was trying to do was show you these woman arnt butch in the least bit, infact their hot, and they can rip harder then 98% of the people that read freeskier.

I think the pictures were done pretty tastefully. I do think that they should have had more skiing shots in there. I think the way it was presented was the 'hey look at these hot skier chicks' instead of 'look at this skier chicks that are amazing, oh yeah they're hot too.'

They made it into the Magazine FIRST as great skiers. If it was all about the looks, then they would recruit Gisele and Heidi to throw on some skis and do some shoots. So no, it doesn't subtract from their credibility of being good skiers.

well meg is one of the hottest and most talented female skiiers around so i think i would say if girl skiiers do things like that to get more attention they will get it.... meg is jsut playing her game but yet people dont even know who she is... im not saying that people know kristi and sarah becuase they were portrayed in a sexual manner im just saying that after that they had much more attention and after i think of this more im not certain that we should be rewarding them for doing this becuase there getting more attention in the ski industry becuase they did sompthing loosely related to skiing.... the point of my post this time was to give meg super props and i hope she keeps doing what she wants to and make her best decisions even if it will not get as much attention as another decision would..... keep rippin hard core meg

I think it wasn't just intended to sell by using sex. I think the point of that is just to show that hot girls aren't always the pro hoes on the hill, that just act like they're hot shit. Just shows that hot girls can see, and awesome skiers can be hot girls. I just have more appreciation for them just because it shows that they are very.. very lucky people haha. And just because there weren't more actual skiing pictures of them doesn't mean much. If you look at the total picture, I'm sure you'd notice that there are probably 100 ski shots of them for every non-ski shot.

Meg this goes to what we talked about in my Mass Media Class in the first few weeks.. a video called 'Killing us softly 3' talked about how womens sports are ALL shown in this light of sexiness. and because like the assumption in golf or in the case of womens basketball where those who compete or attend the games are lesbian or masculine, girls are shown in a light that they are feminine and not gay. It also emphasized how when the whole Brandi Chastain shoot out occured in the olympics that how the action of her taking her shirt off wasnt about that the US won and she made the winning kick, but that she was running around in her sports bra. i think that the girls shouldnt have been portrayed in freeskier like that, and yes more lifestyle or ski shots should have been used. Also that its not like they ever print pictures of guys like that in the ski mags, they always have their ski pants on all baggy, etc.

I don't think It takes away from them as a skier. I have two posters of Kristi Leskinen in my room. both of her skiing. Yes I think she, and the other girls are attractve. I'm sure if the magazine thought it would sell more copies by having a guy pose with little to no clothes on, they would have pics like that. but when you look at the magority of the readers of said magazines, they are male. Men like women in general. so they have the token attractive female pic in the mags. I would have rather seen more pics of them skiing as well. that is why I buy ski mgazines. I would buy maxim if I wanted to see hot nearly naked chicks.
Meg, think of it this way. would you have gotten into powder magazine if you were a guy with your skiing ability alone. I've never seen you ski, so this is speculation. I think you may have been judged on a different scale that the guys. I think there are guys out there that have had better skiing pics, and not gotten into mags.
even outside of magazines, and media in general, girls wear tighter, more revealing clothes than guys. the most revealing thing I have is a sleevless tee. I think that goes for a lot of guys.
Basically, if you are comfortabl posing like they did, go for it. If not you better be a kick ass skier to hold your own. if you are a girl you will be rated on physical beauty in this industry.

its true that sex sells. we all know that. i admit that i went out and bought that issue because of the girl skiers. i had heard a lot about it, but i didn't know that there were such reveiling pics in it. it was a surprising plus.
but anyways. i hardly ever see girls the can ski really well. whenever i do see a girl that is riding the park or the harder runs it just makes me happy to see a girl that is that good at the sport. if she is hot then thats a plus. but since girls are a major minority in the sport of course they are gonna be judged differently. for men in skiing it is mostly about ability. then a little about apearance. but when it comes to a girl, they aren't judged as much on ability because lets face it, most men are better then women at skiing. its just physically true. so when judging women their appearances plays a major roll. i just think its cool to see a girl that can rip. and if she is hot then thats just a plus.

Lots of interesting comments. I remember picking up that issue, flipping through to see which girls were represented in the mag, and the only article I read was the one on sarah burke cause she was the only girl that was fully clothed in that portion of the issue. I wonder if sarah had the option of posing with more skin showing or if she just said no. Anywhoo, if it was the former option, props to ms. burke. A friend of mine says that if a girl can rip it up on skis it adds +2 to the hotness scale... I wonder what the rest of you think.
