How to make single crochet

is it neccesary to make a Chain of like 50 stiches then single crochet or 1 chain and then make a crochet and on and on

Depends on what your ate making. when I make a headband I do a bunch of chains then start the single crochet. If Im making a beanie then then I do like two chains then begin the crochet. I taught myself though so don't take my word on that. If anybody has better advice I would like to hear it too.
