Are fat skis getting out of hand?

I think that fat skis are getting a little out of hand. Such a s the profets, pontoons the new ARG. I can see them being super sweet in really deep powder but how often do the majority of people ski super deep powder...rarley. you may as well buy two snowboards and throw some bindings on them and your good to go.

fat skis are only made for pow skiing, and from what i know, i never saw a pro using these in a competition so i absolutely agree with you

gee, how many POWDER skiing competitions have you seen?
If you watch skiing videos, you will see many pros using pontoons, etc for powder/heli sessions.

BC's are about as wide as you can get without going over the deep end, im talking about skis with ove 100 under boot.

its getting outa hand because they are selling them to people, and most people dnt ski pow tht much. however if you live in whistler and only ski outa bounds than you wood get em or if you work and mica heli or if your a pro. ther obviously not for the average person. but ther good for pow

nope. Ever used a 100 waist ski on powder? 110? You'll love it.

Im not saying there not sweet in powder but for most people they might ski powder only a few times a year. So therefore to buy a super fat ski is kind of a waste of money

they're selling all mountain skis to the average joe. That's because all mountain twins are the best for all around everything.

If you live in the west, then nope, they're not out of hand, they are perfect. I have a pair of spatulas that will probably see 20-30 days this season, and many people ski their's more. I will be on a 99 waist and up for probably 75 days of the year. When the snow is soft, they ski better. I will agree that the fatty-pus-alotta is a stretch, and the pontoons haven't been well received due to the tip profile. But spatulas, ARG's, and lotus's are dream makers. These skis on the East, well, i've never skied there, but it seems impractical.

well im on the east so i will go no bigger than 80 underfoot everything else is just overkill but i can see the use of them out west

Don't mock it 'til you have tried it.
Fatties are super fun in all types of SOFT snow. On hardpack, i.e. eastcost granular chunked ice, they perform accordingly.

1. people on NS need to learn how to spell and how to use the word you're/your correctly.
2. Yes, fat skis are fat and getting even more so. But they are not getting out of hand because they are getting better and better suited for what they are made for: skiing pow. No 13 year old idiot who can't spell is going to buy pontoons or Prophet 130s because they cost $1000 and only come in long lengths and are hard to find. People who are actually smart won't buy them unless they know they have a use for them, as a few lucky people do. Notice how park skis all have waists around 80mm, a number that has not changed for years. apart from park skis, skis are becoming more specialized so there is something for everybody. Pocket rockets used to be the shit in the BC, but after a few years on them people realized that things could go much fatter and now pocketrockets are found on the east coast.

just everyone think about this...
15 years ago, everyone was riding powder on long 200+cm straigth skis with like a 70 underfoot and it worked fine for them. sure fat skis are funner and a lil easier but anyone is still able to ski powder on any ski

if you can get two skis id get realy wide skis for pow and a good park ski
otherwise most people get something inbetween
or here in the east just park twins

Unless you live in a West coast or a major European resort, having skis over 105mm wide is a waste of money.

Well its not like these companies are making thousands upon thousands of pairs of these skis, they know they are very niche specific and they produce them accordingly. It definitly stokes out their athletes, and the slelect few who can justify putting a ski like that in their bag.

I live in Taos and due to global warming we dont get as much snow as we used to. So fat skis are not really ideal where I live. I agree a 130 and 140 under foot is just too much. Anything above a 110 is too much.

Bottom line, if you understand the meaning of 'niche' you'll probably be able to figure out when/where to use specific types of skis.
Yes, kids skiing JPs and Prophets on the EC is retarded, but if they want to, have at it.
I skied 'toons on Tuesday and my Lotus 138s yesterday and their superiority to skinnier, standard shaped skis is unbelieveable.

Traditional shaped skis over 120 at the waist are pointless, I will agree with you on that. However, the skis that are designed specifically for powder have their purpose: skiing deep snow. Just because you don't have a use for them doesn't mean nobody else does. There's no way I'll ever ride 194 Squads because they are way too stiff for a person my size, but I know there are people out there that ski hard enough to justify having a ski that big. There's only a few companies that make a ski just to make it (Fatypus, for example), but the vast majority do fill a niche.

i ski alot of pow pow, so they'd be usuful so there night entirley out of hand. but if your just skiing on them like an idot as a free skiing ski, then you got a problem.

go straight line a couloir and then carv the shit out of the powder with normal skies, then come and tell me again they are useless. try land switch in powder... why the fuck would you buy a fucking SUV? cuz you need it in the snow...but people still buy them in fucking like florida

toons are sweet and super surfy. they are much more stable at high speeds than i expected but the tips are huge and floppy. they'd be a fun fucking ski to own if you were skiing pristine pow all day
lotuses are a completely different animal. they excel in shitty snow and they also roole in the pristine deep. they smear instead of turn (have you ever skied spats?...same idea only waaay better). the 138s skim over everything so once the snow is cut and manked up, you can fly while everyone on regular skis is fighting agains the chop to hold their line
the lotus kinda blow on hardpack, but that's the point right...they aren't built for it
toons will ski fine on hardpack if you drive them properly
again, botton line, if you buy these skis, i would assume you know when/where to use them and have other skis for other situations...if you can only afford 1 pair of skis, get something else unless you live in AK and own a heli, but even then, there are better sticks for that

bottom line: use common sense, don't buy fat skis if you don't need fat skis.
Unless your going on heli trips I wouldn't go anything fatter than the SFB

No because one pair is dead, one is their replacement for using in the UK on indoor slopes and Dryslope, and the third is for using abroad on snow.
Dont you think having 12000 posts is a waste of time?

If people want to buy them, let them. I kinda like all the creativity we're seeing with powder skis recently, like reverse sidecut, reverse camber... its putting so much into the design aspect of skis, so that if people want them, hell, let them buy them!
